Congrats!

Thank you to Andrew Kroczynski of Mahwah Boy Scout Troop 50 for repainting the iron fencing at Ramapo Reformed Church for his Eagle Project!

The Church is one of Mahwah’s most recognized historic sites. It is the oldest public building in Mahwah and is on the National Register of Historic Sites.

We remain grateful to all the Scouts that have given their time and effort to help maintain our historic sites. These special places give the town charm and character while connecting us with the past.

The Museum will be featuring a new exhibit, Revealed: Women’s Fight for the Right to Vote, which is a revealing look at some of the toughest battles undertaken by women, several from New Jersey and New York, to win the right to vote.

2020 is the centennial year for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Suffragists, including New Jersey’s Alice Paul, who pushed the boundaries of political and cultural courage, persisted despite arrests, prison terms, hunger strikes and forced-feedings in order to reach their goal. They challenged presidents and statesmen in order to achieve the passage of the 19th Amendment. This new exhibit tells the real story of how the vote was won.

Opening day for the Mahwah Museum 2020-2021 season will be Saturday, September 26. Thereafter, the Museum, which is located at 201 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah, will be open to the public on Saturdays, from 1 -4 pm.

We are delighted to announce that the Mahwah Museum will reopen to the public on Saturday, September 26, 2020. At this time, the Museum will only be open one day per week, on Saturdays, from 1 to 4 pm.

To ensure the safety of our guests and our docents, we have made some adjustments to our operations.

• Following state guidelines, the Museum will be operating at 25% capacity. This means only 10 persons at a time upstairs and 6 downstairs. We will ask guests to wait outside if we have reached capacity.
• Everyone entering the Museum must wear a face covering.
• We will use a temperature gun at the entrance; anyone registering a fever will not be admitted.
• We will have hand sanitizers available inside the Museum.
• We have created a one-way path through the Museum and ask that guests stay 6 feet away from others.
• In the Donald Cooper Model Railroad area, we have removed the play train table, coloring book area and videos to reduce risk.
• Play a Les Paul Guitar must be scheduled ahead of time. Guitars that are played will be quarantined for three days in between players.

We are featuring a new exhibit, "Revealed: Women's Fight for the Right to Vote."

Celebrating the passage of the 19th Amendment today! Did you know that Mahwah's own Florence Halsey was involved in the suffrage movement? Born on Sheffield Farm in 1877, Halsey began her suffrage work in 1913, speaking around northern New Jersey for the National American Woman Suffrage Association. In 1915, during a push for a NJ referendum she drove suffrage speakers around the state and issued a call in the news: “Men of New Jersey be just! One hundred thousand of your women are asking you today for the right of self-government. They do not ask that you give up your right or any privilege that is yours. They ask only for the same right that long ago was made a free gift to all American men, white or black.”

Les Paul at 105: A Virtual Celebration! An Online Concert Weekend, presented by the Mahwah Museum

The Mahwah Museum is pleased to present an online concert series during the weekend of June 6-9 to celebrate Les Paul’s 105th birthday with Lou Pallo (& guests), Muriel Anderson and Thom Bresh. On June 9 is a Zoom event, A Conversation with Gene Paul.

Viewers may see the performances on the Les Paul in Mahwah page or go to YouTube and search Les Paul At 105.

Lou Pallo played regularly with Les for over 30 years at Fat Tuesdays then at The Iridium. In an interview, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, described Lou as “ an incredible guitar player” and the man “who knows a million chords”. In addition to Les, Lou’s early influences included Tony Mottola. Lou has worked with a wide variety of celebrities from Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald to Mr. Richards himself. Performing on Sunday, June 7th at 4:00 pm.

Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. Her CD, Nightlight Daylight, was chosen as one of the top 10 CDs of the decade by Guitar Player Magazine, and she has performed/recorded with Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Victor Wooten, Tommy Emmanuel and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Performing on Saturday, June 6th at 7:00 pm.

Thom Bresh was born in Hollywood, California and raised in the middle of guitar royalty. His father, Merle Travis, was one of the most influential American guitarist of the 20th Century. With this sort of heritage and upbringing, what do you have? As Chet Atkins put it, “Thom Bresh is a "World Class" guitarist that deserves to be heard.” Performing Saturday June 6th at 5:30 pm.

Gene Paul is an audio recording/mixing/mastering engineer, producer, musician and son of the legendary musician and guitar innovator, Les Paul. He was an engineer at Atlantic Recording Studios during their famed 1960s–80s period and is currently the chief mastering engineer at G&J Audio, a mixing and mastering studio for major and independent labels focused on reissues and new recordings. Gene will share stories of his father with moderator Charlie Carreras, Vice President, Mahwah Museum, Professor Emeritus of History, Ramapo College. A Conversation with Gene Paul (registration required) on June 9th at 7:00 pm.

Visit Mahwah Museum website, Mahwahmuseum.org, for links and registration for a Conversation with Les Paul.

The Board of Trustees of the Mahwah Museum has decided to close the Museum to the public from March 13 to March 31. We are doing this out of concern for both our patrons and docents and to support the efforts to encourage social distance in an effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

We very much hope that the Museum will be able to open on April 1 and carry on with the events we have planned. The Board will review the situation at the end of March and if we need to extend the closure, we will.

Keep well and safe everybody!
