The lynching of Francis McIntosh, a young free Black man in St. Louis, became part of a larger story of mob violence, slavery, and growing lawlessness in America. Dr. Saladin Ambar's Murder on the Mississippi examines how these events helped shape Lincoln's emerging political ideas and his growing opposition to slavery.
