REDWOODS IN THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS
Ecology and management in an historical context:

This presentation will be about how Redwoods have responded to changes in human forest management since the Spanish Conquest in 1769. Some of the data will be surprising since preservation as a policy has not been kind to those ancient trees. Exploring that history helps inform us about possible solutions and exposes gaps in our learning. Questions remain and answers are being pursued at Wildergarten now to be shared with you.Mark Vande Pol a fourth generation Californian has done extensive research on Native Plants and trees of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mark and his wife built their home here with the desire to save a piece of California as he knew it as a child. The goal is for the property to function as a laboratory to teach and develop the restoration process while learning more about how we might benefit from native plant control. You can view Mark's work at his website www.wildergarten.org.In the spring we will have the opportunity to tour Mark’s native plant restoration project Wildergarten in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tour date will be available at the time of his February 27th presentation.

At this Loma Prieta School Forum event on February 27th Dr. Stephen Payne Santa Cruz Mountain Historian will be signing his recent printing of “A Howling Wilderness” and you can get a copy of his book for a $25 LPM donation.
