Barbara Strasen has taken different approaches to conveying her vision over her varied career. She pushes the boundaries of painting, photography, printmaking, collage, and new media to create multi-image works that reflect upon the intricacies of the human condition. She finds beauty and harmony in the turbulence and in so doing, shares with us a way forward. Barbara Strasen’s work is about reconciling the dark and the light, the mundane and the lofty, the witty and the poignant; it is about how to simultaneously hold two truths and at its core, the work is about what it means to be human.

The use of airbrush effectively removes recognizable brush strokes of the artist’s hand and gives the paintings a sense of existing outside of traditional painting. The viewer knows they are not photographs but there is an unknowable quality to the work. This experience of the incomprehensible pops us out of our complacent art viewing and gives us pause. The mind and eye wonder and wander - exploring the surface for clues - and in that moment we are connected to the power of art and of nature and what can only be described as the experience of the sublime.

Three distinct bodies of work make up the series: banned books, Fahrenheit 451, and the libraries. Works inspired by specific books are titled as such: *Animal Farm*, *Maus*, *The Handmaid’s Tale*, and *Catch-22*. The forms of drifting smoke reference interactions between characters.

Carol Inez Charney (b. 1959, United States) received her BA in painting from the University of Santa Cruz and her MFA in photography from San Jose State University and has exhibited extensively on the West Coast and in New York. Her work is included in numerous private collection as well as the US Department of State Art Bank, Morgan Stanley Art Collection, Stanford University Medical Center Art Collection, AT&T Corporate Art Collection, Microsoft Corporate Art Collection, American Capitol Art Collection, Chapman University Permanent Collection of Art (Orange, CA), and IndyMac Bank Corporate Art Collection. She lives and works in Santa Cruz, CA.

Barbara Strasen (b. New York, 1943) received her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University and her MFA from the University of California, Berkeley. Strasen has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries across the USA and Europe including the Whitney Biennial (1975), the University of Southern California’s Fisher Art Museum, MoMA P.S.1, Long Beach Museum of Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, Grey Art Gallery at NYU, Islip Art Museum (New York), Het Apollohuis (Netherlands), Budapest Galerie (Hungary), Frauenmuseum (Germany), Galeria Soloblu (Milan) and the FlashArt Museum (Trevi, Italy). Strasen’s work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Artweek Magazine, the New York Times, Los Angeles Weekly, Artcore, among others. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC); the Wellcome Trust Art Collection (London); the Colburn School of Music Art Collection (Los Angeles); the Long Beach Museum of Art; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; the Austin Art Museum; the Frauenmuseum (Bonn, Germany); the Allen Memorial Art Museum; the Blanton Museum/University of Texas (Austin) and the collection of Herbert and Dorothy Vogel. Strasen lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Samantha Fields (b. 1972, Cleveland, OH) received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and has received numerous awards and recognition, including a prestigious City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Grant. She has an extensive exhibition history, including shows at rdfa Los Angeles, The California Museum of Photography at UCRartsblock, The University Art Museum in Long Beach, and more. Her work has been collected by and exhibited at noted public institutions such as the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA. Her work has been reviewed in the Los Angeles Times, Riot Material, Art & Cake, The LA Weekly, ZYZZYVA, Artweek, Art in America, Art ltd., Artillery, The Detroit News, The Detroit Free Press and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She is a Professor of Art at California State University, Northridge and lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

In this new series, smoke drifts against dark grounds creating compositions that feel like memory made visible. They are an echo of voices pressed into silence, of books burned or buried for daring to imagine too freely. In many pieces, the forms of the smoke mirror the storylines of banned and challenged books, their narratives briefly reassembled in air before fading away.

At 83, Strasen has been creating work for more than six decades and has watched the world undergo many cycles of change. From being a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley in the 1960s, to participating in the Whitney Biennial in 1975, to a room installation at MoMA P.S.1 and solo shows at the Long Beach Museum, to being part of Herb and Dorothy Vogels’ noted collection, Strasen’s career has spanned a momentous number of years and accomplishments.

Samantha Fields’ paintings are rendered using a very fine airbrush to apply hundreds of misted paint layers. The resulting surfaces are luminous and velvety. The depth Fields achieves in her powerful skies using this technique is punctuated by precise detail work along the low horizons. The human interventions in the landscape are depicted using tiny stencils or small amounts of brushwork. There is an elegance and a calm to the surface that belies the chaotic nature of the subject matter.
