We are excited to share the recent acquisition of Hung Liu’s monumental work, ‘To Live’ to Art Bridges Foundation which supports the creation of collection-based exhibitions of American art at museums and loans work from their extensive collection to regional museums on a long-term basis.

On the one-year anniversary of her mother’s passing in 2012, Hung Liu completed fifty-one small paintings - titled ‘To Live’ - during a forty-nine day mourning period, or roughly one painting a day. Initially working from photographs of objects left in her hospitalized mother’s Beijing apartment, Liu painted images like jars on a shelf, a dust pan with hand broom, her slippers, her bed and the telephone over which she and her mother had spoken daily for years. The objects lead to a sequence of three paintings - rendered on the thirty-fourth day - representing the moment of her mother’s death as a flat, green, electronic line on a bedside monitor, the very next painting is a thick, anguished smear of black, followed by another in which a faint painted circle emerges. In quick succession, the circle morphs into the for of a lighted candle, and one candle follows another - each a close-up of a waxy, luminous orb adrift in a a dark space - for the remaining several weeks until the artist ran out of canvases.

This important artwork was featured in a solo exhibition entitled ‘Rainbow: In Memory of Hung Liu’ at our gallery from January 8 - March 5, 2022. Liu passed away from pancreatic cancer on August 7, 2021 and our exhibition was the first of several memorial shows celebrating her life and career.

Our kind of studio visit going through older works and coming across some epic early photographs of artist, Nike Schröder with a leisurely visit with her sweet pup, George and all of the chickens.

My ultimate Shero would have been 79 today and it’s hard to believe that she’s been gone nearly 20 years! Her death has been reimagined in recent months having gone through a very similar experience with Hung Liu and both she and my mother were diagnosed late and died quickly. As the actual loss fades into the past and the grief subsides the memory lives on stronger than ever. Love you mom and thank you for giving me the foundation of who I am and the ability toy know what I can achieve! 🥰🥰🥰
