In 2018, eight paintings from Carter Potter’s studio were rented as set dressing for Good Trouble, the Freeform television series, where they appeared as the contents of a fictional Los Angeles exhibition, Breaking Through: 8 Artists on the Verge.
For more than three decades, Potter had resisted suggestions that his film-strip paintings be backlit. For the production, however, fluorescent tubes were installed behind six of the eight works, altering the conditions under which the paintings were seen and recorded.
Returned to the studio after filming, the eight works remained together until their presentation at as-is.
Picture Snatcher reunites the paintings while incorporating an element from their brief life on set, revisiting the intersection of painting, image, and the mediated conditions of their display.

Now on view: ‘Niko Chodor: State of impermanence’

Identity documents are strange and estranging things. Bearing images, text, seals, and intricate guilloche patterns, they assign identity, status, and place through visual systems that appear fixed, yet are continually reproduced and revised.

For State of impermanence, Chodor extracts the ornamental security patterns found on passports, visas, and permanent resident cards, meticulously redrawing and enlarging them by hand. Displaced from their administrative function, these forms become studies of identity, migration, and the constructed nature of national belonging.

Shared across borders and produced by a small number of specialized manufacturers, the visual language of the identity document reveals nationality itself as a system of representation.

State of impermanence is now on view at as-is through August 29.

We are pleased to announce “Carter Potter’s Picture Snatcher,” an exhibition that re-stages and critically re-considers a scene in a 2018 episode of the television series Good Trouble in which Potter’s paintings were (with some notable modifications) prominently featured. Picture Snatcher is presented in conjunction with “Niko Chodor: State of impermanence.” Both shows open on Saturday, July 25, with an artists’ reception from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at as-is.

“In 2018, eight paintings from my studio were rented to serve as set dressing for Good Trouble, the Freeform television series. They appeared in season one, episode twelve, as the contents of a fictional Los Angeles exhibition titled Breaking Through: 8 Artists on the Verge. The title of the episode, “Broken Arted,” announces a familiar tale of thwarted romance.

For more than three decades I have resisted suggestions that these paintings, which are composed of film strips, whether interwoven or simply stretched and stapled across the stretcher bars, could be improved by backlighting. Collectors, curators, gallerists, and well-meaning viewers have regularly proposed it. I have always said no.

For Good Trouble, however, the luminance of the production’s environment required it. Fluorescent tubes mounted behind six of the eight paintings would allow their contents to be properly registered by the camera. I consented. The episode aired.

The paintings were returned to the studio and have remained there since. This exhibition at as-is reunites the same eight works as they were intended to be seen, while including an important element from the production.”
