New work by JPW3 will be included in “Signal To Noise: Finding Form through Abstraction in an Undefinable Era,” a group exhibition curated by Michael Slenske which will open at Diane Rosenstein, New York, NY on January 13 🪴🪴🪴 The exhibition explores the concepts of signal and noise, and the ratio of one to another in contemporary art. In his seminal text “Concerning the Spiritual in Art” the synesthetic painter Wassily Kandinsky delved deep into the transformative power of abstraction, noting the further we distance organic forms from the forefront of a composition, the more pronounced the attenuated abstraction becomes. In this process, any remaining representational elements are compelled to reach their “own inner tone and harmony.” Another way to think of this is through the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) which is employed in music recording, data analysis and image-making. In music, the signal is the intended, meaningful information, while the noise comprises any unwanted disturbances or random fluctuations that can degrade signal quality. A higher SNR indicates a stronger, clearer sound. When dealing in analytics, signal represents actual data whereas noise encompasses any informational errors. And in fields like photography or remote sensing, signal is the object of interest; noise the imperfections or distortions that reduce an image’s fidelity.

We are delighted to announce “Greensleeves,” an exhibition of new paintings by David Korty, which will open on Saturday, January 20 💚💚💚 In the works throughout Greensleeves, the ceramic vessels that held bouquets of flowers in previous paintings have disappeared. Instead, this new flora appears at eye level, jutting across light blue backgrounds, creating a tangled green matrix. Although confined to Korty’s sharply defined squares and rectangles, each image within seems to glow under the pressure of its own hermetic environment. Amid the disc-like flowers and their accompanying, arrow-straight stems, other cut paper forms emerge that allude to Korty’s long standing motifs—printed letters, circular voids that resemble hole punches or eyes—and include a new one, the artist’s own handprint.

Happy birthday, Han Bing! 🥂🥂🥂We were delighted to present “Crust,” the artist’s third exhibition at the gallery, this past spring. Her works are painted navigations, reconfiguring signifiers of disorder in a gradual evolution towards abstraction. Her practice is informed by her observations of city life in Shanghai, Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Paris, taking “urban camouflage” as primary source material—particularly the ripped posters that cover subway stations and metro stops. The ensuing paintings explore what is held and concealed within these fields of fragmentation. Though generous and poetically open, Han Bing’s tableaux resist quick association or easy interpretation. Her works reveal that the act of looking does not dictate what “is,” but enacts the first step in an impartation of meaning. Cheers to you, Han Bing!

New work by Daniel Tyree Gaitor-Lomack will be included in “Signal To Noise: Finding Form through Abstraction in an Undefinable Era,” a group exhibition curated by Michael Slenske which will open at Diane Rosenstein, New York, NY on January 13 🎶🎶🎶 Gaitor-Lomack’s new “Dodge the System” series features high performance contact prints, fixative, and chalk on artisan watercolor paper. The works preserve marks from the artist’s “Dodge the System” performance at Frieze Los Angeles in 2023, in which he stood in front of artisan watercolor paper while patriotic striped, chalk-coated dodgeballs flew at him, forcing him to move aside. The artist likens the relationship between the performance and his drawings to that of the temporal installations of Christo and Jeanne-Claude and Jeanne-Claude’s drawings. The artist discusses the feeling of needing, due to his gender and skin color, to always dodge the system—politics, war, finance, whatever it may be. His work honors that ongoing struggle.

Night Gallery looks forward to opening our second show with Tahnee Lonsdale in September 2024. In 2023, we were delighted to announce our representation of the artist and present her work at Frieze London ⭐⭐⭐ Lonsdale’s oil paintings depict tender scenes of figures whose bodies and limbs intertwine in flowing choreographies. Her rounded, pared down forms are both totemic and ethereal. They take inspiration from Henry Moore’s sculptures and originate in the artist’s drawing practice, retaining the solidity of the former and the delicacy of the latter.
