“Perfect Lovers” (Untitled) is Michelle Jane Lee’s first show at Rusha & Co., on view through October 31. The work is built primarily in wax. Skin-like surfaces that take pressure, hold marks, and carry text and images tattooed, carved, or embedded into them, alongside chains that move between adornment and restraint. The title inverts Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (Perfect Lovers), and the show treats love and intimacy as something continually made rather than fixed, drawn from personal encounters, q***r histories, and memory. Some works reveal themselves slowly; what stays buried and what surfaces keeps shifting.

Evoking silty glacial rivers, lush beds of moss, velvety night skies, and the luminous quality of Arctic light, Hollow Holds the Whole invites viewers to traverse a landscape of abstracted sculptural environments. Comprising immersive beaded installations, video, and sound, Sienna Shields’ exhibition cultivates the wonderment and disorientation that can occur when encountering elemental nature.

In her hands, the small hollow of a bead becomes a vehicle of expansive connection as Shields threads together hundreds of thousands of beads and miles of wire. The physical and social resonance of her materials takes on new dimensionality—synthetic plastic hair beads and metal cable evoke connections to technology, race, culture, and commerce—forces that shape contemporary life at both the micro and macro levels.

About the artist
Sienna Shields is an Alaska-based artist whose practice spans painting, collage, quilting, performance, film, and installation. She was a founding member of The Yams collective and a core member of the DUMBA collective. Her work has been presented in museums, galleries, and festivals across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe.

Rebekah Rubalcava’s ɐʌɐɔlɐqnɹ ɥɐʞǝqǝɹ paintings inhabit the charged territory between religious symbolism, sexuality, and feminine experience, where inherited systems of belief are continuously reimagined through lived experience.

If Kenneth Anger transforms reality through montage and transubstantiation, Catherine Corman through the historical apparatus of the camera, Emma Gray through image persistence and temporal layering, and Jon Pylypchuk through the accumulating patina of lived time, Rubalcava works through signification. She takes images that already carry histories, the n**e, the serpent, fruit, devotion, temptation, the feminine body, and allows them to pass through the particularities of her own experience.

The familiar begins to feel strange. A symbol from religious painting becomes entangled with sexuality; the body becomes both subject and site of judgment; desire and devotion begin to occupy the same space. Her figures seem suspended between dream and reality, often carrying the theatricality of a film still while remaining rooted in the inherited language of painting.

Here, the mechanism of transmutation is meaning itself. Rubalcava takes what has already been signified and gives it another life through memory, desire, mythology, and the feminine experience today. The symbol survives, and it no longer belongs entirely to its history.
