In his latest body of work, Gabriel Guthrie explores the generative potential of opposing forces and the ways contradiction can create new possibilities for connection. Through juxtapositions of color, material, and process, Guthrie brings together elements that appear at odds: green and red, water and oil, additive and subtractive gestures, concealed layers and exposed surfaces. Beginning with an unpredictable monoprinting process before introducing layers of paint, oil pastel, and oil stick, he balances intuition, intention, and chance. Through this interplay of separation and connection, the works consider how distinct forms and seemingly contradictory states can retain their individuality while becoming something more through their relationship to one another.
