In late September, we gathered with our community for the MAK Center’s GLOW UP Benefit & Lighting Auction. Endless thanks to our attendees, artists and designers, sponsors, host committee and our dedicated team for making it such a memorable time.

The impact of this benefit extends beyond one weekend; it is a long-term investment in the MAK Center, enabling us to deepen artistic, intellectual, and public engagement with our exhibitions, residency programs, and year-round public events. Supporting the MAK Center helps us carry forward R.M. Schindler’s creative legacy of experimentation across our three sites: the Schindler House, Mackey Apartments, and Fitzpatrick-Leland House.

In late September, we gathered with our community for the MAK Center’s GLOW UP Benefit & Lighting Auction. Endless thanks to our attendees, artists and designers, sponsors, host committee and our dedicated team for making it such a memorable time.

Join us at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House on Thursday, October 22, 7:00 – 9:00 PM for the opening of “Social Housing: Vienna—Los Angeles.” This exhibition brings together case studies from both cities to examine the relationship between architecture, housing policy, and civic responsibility.

“Social Housing: Vienna—Los Angeles” unfolds at the Schindler House, designed in 1922 by Austrian émigré architect R.M. Schindler as an experiment in cooperative living. Its construction coincided with the emergence of Red Vienna, when the city began developing the municipally supported housing system that would transform Vienna over the following century. These parallel experiments in collective life provide a historical frame for considering the sharply different trajectories the two cities have followed: Vienna’s sustained public investment in housing alongside the largely market-driven conditions that have shaped Los Angeles.

Rather than proposing Vienna as a model to be directly replicated, “Social Housing: Vienna—Los Angeles” asks what these distinct histories can reveal about the possibilities for housing today, and how architecture, public institutions, and collective action might contribute to new forms of affordable and shared urban life.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is pleased to be partnering with Cometa (Cometa Sound) for our upcoming GLOW UP MAK Center Benefit. Cometa will be handling all things sound, featuring DJ Jamma D (Jamma D) on September 25 and DJ Mesmé (Mesmé) on September 26.

Cometa is a Los Angeles-based audio design house merging modern industrial design philosophy with high-fidelity sound.
