The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is pleased to announce "Final Projects: Group LIX - spindrift LIX," featuring new bodies of work produced by our Artists- and Architects-in-Residence: Alexandra Kahl, Axel Koschier, and Sarah Silbernagel. The exhibition marks the culmination of the 59th iteration of the Artists- and Architects-in-Residence Program at the Mackey Apartments.

Works by Kahl, Koschier, and Silbernagel investigate topics of spectacle, transposition, and archive, respectively—commingling to reflect on the group experience of this time spent in Los Angeles. Join us on Thursday, September 10, at 6:00 PM to celebrate the opening of this exhibition.

"Final Projects: Group LIX - spindrift LIX" is supported by the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles. The Artists- and Architects-in-Residence Program at the Mackey Apartments is organized and led in cooperation with the MAK — Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.

“Free Beer,” but it's art.

Available for six dollars tomorrow, Thursday, August 27, “Free Beer” is a project by the artist collective SUPERFLEX. In conjunction with our current exhibition “SUPERFLEX: Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons,” we’ll be selling “Free Beer” at the Schindler House as part of Copy Right, a conversation with Daniel McClean and Brian Butler about the distinctions between original and copy, authorship and ownership.

SUPERFLEX’s “Free Beer” plays on a well-known quote by the free software activist Richard Stallman: "Free as in 'free speech' not as in 'free beer.'" “Free Beer” aims to create a counter-system to copyright, which is a regulative system of law and metaphorical rights.

Developed under a Creative Commons license, “Free Beer” extends the exhibition's exploration of authorship and ownership into everyday production, inviting anyone to use, adapt, and redistribute its recipe. It has been brewed for this event by Solarc Brewing.

“Free Beer” has been brewed in breweries, workshops, and kitchens worldwide, with and without SUPERFLEX’s participation, including in Taipei, Sao Paolo, Los Angeles, Munich, Knoxville, Lausanne, Cornwall, Bolzano, and Auckland.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles is pleased to announce that we are among the most recent cohort of LA-based nonprofit cultural organizations awarded a General Operating Support Grant from Perenchio Foundation.

This significant unrestricted grant will enable the MAK Center to invest strategically in the people, core resources, and institutional infrastructure necessary to sustain our work presenting dynamic residencies, exhibitions, and programs traversing the intersections of art and architecture.

With this multi-year grant from the Perenchio Foundation, the MAK Center will be able to deepen the reach of our work within Los Angeles and build on more than three decades of discourse between Los Angeles, Vienna, and beyond as a Los Angeles nonprofit cultural institution and the California satellite of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.

The Residency and Exhibitions Associate supports the MAK Center’s exhibitions and international residency program, ensuring smooth operations, artist support, and timely coordination across MAK Center sites. The role manages exhibition logistics, installation, and documentation, and serves as the primary liaison for the residency program at the Mackey Apartments. This is a highly collaborative role focused on production, artist care, and operational coordination in support of the MAK Center’s programmatic goals.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is pleased to present “Copy Right,” a conversation with Daniel McClean and Brian Butler in conjunction with the exhibition “SUPERFLEX: Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons.”

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture and the SOM Foundation are pleased to present “Sixth Street Viaduct as Next Generation Infrastructure” with Researcher-in-Residence Linda C. Samuels, marking the culmination of her residency.

Samuels’s research project utilizes a combination of data-based analysis and empirical, qualitative explorations, intentionally combining quantitative information with lived experience. Revisiting the project four years after the bridge first opened, and just months before the unveiling of the park below, her analysis asks how the project lives up to its promise as next generation infrastructure.

Join us at the MAK Center at the Mackey Apartments on August 13 at 6:00 PM as Samuels shares observations from her month in residence and introduces her body of research that examines the Sixth Street Viaduct as a mobility conduit, public space, and prototype for next generation infrastructure.
