Some of the darkest stories in art history were never meant to be beautiful.
And yet, artists made them unforgettable. 🖤

Before Goth became a genre, a fashion, or an aesthetic, Gothic art was already exploring darkness, suffering, fear, death, and the supernatural. From the grotesque demons of The Torment of Saint Anthony to the agony of Crucifixion, the quiet grief of Pietà, the haunting Entombment, and the brutal tension of Michelangelo’s David and Goliath—these works prove that art has always had a fascination with the darker side of human existence.

It wasn’t simply about making art look dark.
It was about making fear, faith, suffering and mortality impossible to look away from.

So, before Goth had a name… Michelangelo’s art was already serving darkness, anguish, and drama. 🕯️🩸
