The Most Anticipated Museum Openings of 2023

Look! Our client is in the news. Smithsonian Magazine has named the American Museum of Natural History’s Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation; New York City as one of the "most anticipated museum openings of 2023." Opening to the public on February 17, the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation contains nearly four million scientific specimens. That's a lot of science to learn about.

100 years after unearthing King Tut's tomb, archaeologists make new discoveries

It's been 46 years since we opened the Tut blockbuster at the National Gallery of Art. The story keeps going.

Uncovered coffins, papyrus documents and other artifacts have recently been found at the Saqqara site in Giza, Egypt. It coincides with a new accusation that jewelry was stolen from the site.

The Tennessee State Museum is honored to be a recipient of the 2022 Southeastern Museums Conference-SEMC Silver Award in the exhibitions category for our current exhibition, "Painting the Smokies: Art, Community, and the Making of a National Park." The SEMC Exhibition Competition showcases the best in our profession and provides benchmarks for regional exhibition efforts in southeastern museums.

“We have the highest regard for the work of the Southeastern Museums Conference and for the many museum colleagues throughout the region who join us as members,” said Ashley Howell, executive director, Tennessee State Museum. “The Great Smoky Mountains is an area that has been well travelled in the last century. We saw an opportunity to explore the subject of the park’s creation, through art and artifacts from within our collection, to tell an expansive story of the region. To be honored by a panel of peers for this exhibition is a great honor and team accomplishment.”

Airborne and Special Operations Museum — Design and Production Incorporated

honors the military’s airborne divisions of the Armed Forces. August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayette, NC exhibits a comprehensive history. Here are our photos.

Preserving History at the Tennessee State Museum

Purple Heart Day commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit.

General George Washington created the Badge of Merit in 1782. He designated the honor to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action.” Through the efforts of General Douglas MacArthur, the U.S. War Department created the Order of the Purple Heart. In 1944, the requirements limited the award to only those wounded or killed in combat.

Nearly 1.9 million service members have earned Purple Hearts since its creation. It is the oldest U.S. military honor still bestowed upon service members today.
