Founded by “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith, the Museum of American Speed is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and displaying physical items significant in racing and automotive history. The vast collection resulted from the Smiths’ personal involvement in racing and hot rodding for more than six decades, and their lifelong passion for collecting and preserving historic automotive artifacts. The

museum is a federally recognized 501(c)3 Private Foundation and currently encompasses more than 150,000 sq. over three levels. Located in Lincoln Nebraska on the Speedway Motors campus, the Museum of American Speed is one of Nebraska's best kept secrets and has a large collection of unique, one of a kind racing engines, automobilia, pedal cars, and toys.

5 Minutes with Tim Matthews of the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed.

“I cannot remember a time of my life when I wasn’t passionate about cars.”

That’s what Tim Matthews, the curator of the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed, said when we started our conversation. It’s something you understand is 100-percent legit as soon as you meet Tim.

Tim grew up in a car family in South Dakota and before he had his license he was working on a ’64 Plymouth that he and his dad rebuilt, painted, and raced. Not only did he gain mechanical knowledge from the process, but even more about how cars can have a lasting impact on our lives and relationships.

Tim moved to Nebraska pursing a master’s degree in art and found himself in need of a summer job. Speedway Motors was nearby so he applied for what he thought would be a temporary customer service position but instead grew into a career surrounded by automotive archeology. When you combine a passion for all that is automotive, then sprinkle in history, Americana, pop culture, and a taste of BMX, you get Tim – and he wants to share it all!
