Artist Dr. Eugene Poole Jr
“Legacy in Motion: Black Jockey Kentucky Derby Winners”

Artist Dr. Eugene Poole Jr has created a series of quilts honoring Black jockeys who won 15 of the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby 1800s-1900s, and whose stories are little known or recognized for their historic contributions to the sport.

A Hopkinsville, Kentucky, native, master’s degree in architecture from UK, and lead architect of the US Capital building, Poole is an artist whose paintings are in collections internationally and two US Presidents. He began working with textiles in 2021 and has created this series of intricate quilts of Black jockeys which are featured currently in the Storied Quilts Exhibit.

Dr. Poole is a remarkable man with a remarkable story to tell. Make plans to join us for his talk this Sunday.

Gregory is a fourth generation quilter and artist raised in the mountains of East Tennessee. Her kaleidoscopic quilts are filled with playful pop-culture references and pointed social commentary. Gregory lives in Nashville and her practice bridges painting, animation and quilting, exploring themes of storytelling and the interplay between tradition and technology.
