Breath-taking to think about: the photographic eye that will document the Harlem Renaissance more than any other began to be shaped here on this road in Lenox, Mass in the summer of 1900.

Many years before a bypass crossed Hubbard street here, a cheap but functional new camera arrived at the home of John and Susan Van Der Zee. John is the sexton of Trinity Church, and his 14 year old son James has earned the camera selling home products door to door.

The grand Aspinwall resort was not yet ruins in Kennedy Park, and between home and his job waiting tables there, James begins to hone his artistry. “It’s a hard job to get the camera to see it like you see it," he said later. "Sometimes you have it just the way you want it, and then you look in the camera and you don’t have the balance. The main thing is to get the camera to see it the way you see it.”

In 1906 he took that eye to Harlem, where he eventually got a studio on Lenox Avenue, and through a lifetime of work and struggle, gave us an incredible visual record of the Harlem Renaissance, of New York, of America.
