NMSU Art Museum The University Art Museum serves as a showcase for the visual arts in the border region.

Our focus includes the alignment of our exhibitions and programming with the contemporary and interdisciplinary teaching missions of the NMSU Department of Art faculty, graduates students, and undergraduates and the whole of New Mexico State University. We curate original exhibitions; and steward over 4,200 works in the university’s permanent collection. The latter includes the country’s largest c

ollection of Mexican retablos (devotional paintings on tin) as well as photographs, paintings, prints and graphics, book art, and small scale sculpture and metals. The Gallery provides curatorial and exhibition management experiences for graduate and undergraduate students.

You’re invited! Please join us for the closing reception of our summer exhibitions, Mapping Spaces: Selections from the Lannan Art Collection at NMSU and Homage to Then/Small Worlds, from 5-7 PM on Friday, August 28, 2026. 

Mapping Spaces: Selections from the Lannan Art Collection at NMSU will be on display in the Contemporary Art Gallery through September 5, 2026 and Homage to Then/Small Worlds will be on display in the Mullennix Bridge Gallery through September 12, 2026.

Save the date for Art History: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, a pop-up exhibition curated by current and recently graduated NMSU students.

The exhibition invites viewers to learn about the many ways in which iconic artworks and ubiquitous motifs from the past have transcended their periods of creation and are continuously recycled in contemporary art. Artworks from regional, international, and student artists from the NMSU Permanent Art Collection are paired with recognizable works from a broad spectrum of art history to explore how the past simultaneously lives on and is disrupted by contemporary art. This exhibition aids viewers with educational guides including contextual information and interpretive suggestions, providing a framework to consciously observe the history of art beyond this exhibition.

Art History: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle opens August 7 and will be on display through September 19.

Today is the day! Watch the Adventures of Buratino at the UAM, starting at 5:30 pm. The Adventures of Buratino is a children’s musical that follows Buratino, a boy made of wood, who meets the Karabas Barabas’ theatre actors and sets out to free them. Directed by Leonid Nechayev, the film is an adaptation of The Golden Key by Alexey Tolstoy—a story that began as a Soviet translation of Pinocchio before it’s dramatic departure form the original story.

Join us for an introduction by Dr. Megan Metcalf at 5:30 pm, followed by the film. The UAM will screen the film in its original Russian language with English subtitles. Popcorn and refreshments provided, but bring a blanket and a pillow!

Wishing a belated happy birthday to our Collections Curator, Courtney Uldrich!

Courtney has been on leave from the UAM the past couple months for a very exciting reason! And today we got to finally meet our newest gallery girl.

As our Collection Curator, she manages our collection of almost 5,000 objects! This includes monitoring, digitizing, writing, curating, archiving—just to name a few skills Courtney juggles. Homage to Then/Small Worlds is a two-part solo exhibition by Louis Ocepek, renowned local artist, former Department Head, and Professor Emeritus of the NMSU Department of Art. The curated selection of meticulous direct gravure prints, gouache paintings, and digital prints reflect on the aesthetics of time, space, and the perceptions of our physical and metaphysical worlds.

Homage to Then/Small Worlds is on display in the Mullennix Bridge Gallery through September 12, 2026.

Happy Birthday to Keslee, our Exhibitions Coordinator! Thank you for keeping our galleries fresh and funky ✨💅

What does an Exhibition Coordinator do? She is responsible for the design and ex*****on of our exhibitions! On most days, you can find Keslee designing future exhibitions in SketchUp working collaboratively with artists and curators to make a 3D model of our gallery spaces. She oversees the logistics for shipping and handling artworks, often driving across the country herself to pick up and deliver artworks. Once the artwork is ready to go, she begins installing—moving walls, painting, sanding, creating pedestals, and so much more—all while leading and training student staff. If you’ve ever visited the UAM and thought the exhibitions looked great, then Keslee probably made it happen 💪💪💪 Keslee Caitlynn Bennett
