That’s a wrap on the 2026 UW STEM Carnival! 🔬🦖⛏️

We had a great time meeting many of the nearly 1,700 K–12 students who made the trek to UW to explore STEM with more than 50 units from across campus.

At our booth, students dug into ant-pile dirt to discover how paleontologists and geologists use the tiny rocks, fossils, minerals, and even gemstones collected by ants to get a glimpse of what might be hiding beneath the ground. It’s a surprisingly useful prospecting technique with roots stretching back to the early days of paleontology in the American West!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to dig, sift, and discover with us!

🦖 SPOTTED: A dinosaur on the University of Wyoming campus!

This not-quite-adult red-tailed hawk was photographed keeping watch from a campus light pole. And yes, it really is a dinosaur! Birds are the only surviving lineage of dinosaurs, carrying their prehistoric heritage into the modern world.

Proof that dinosaurs still roam UW. 🦅
