The Epergne is a purely English creation despite it's French name. They were first created by skilled silversmiths, many of whom had escaped French persecution of Protestants in the 17th century. Epergnes emerged onto wealthy dinner tables in the late 18th century and remained popular into the early 20th century. Many dining room tables displayed these unique centerpieces, especially as they became more affordable for the middle class when artisans began made them using more affordable materials such as Sheffield silver and glass. The first Epergnes seemed to resemble strange creatures with multiple arms offering baskets of sweetmeats or fruit to diners and eventually simplified to include perhaps a dish and a vase for flowers. Majority of epergnes lost their baskets by the middle of the 19th century. Regardless of their shape and purpose they represent a past era of beauty and craftsmanship.
