Haan Museum of Indiana Art

Haan Museum of Indiana Art The Haan Museum is a 1904 historic mansion and home to an impressive collection of Indiana art. Steele and the Hoosier Group.

The Haan Museum is home to artwork by historic and contemporary Indiana artists, including an impressive collection of works by T.C. It's all displayed in a historic mansion that was built in 1904 for the St. Louis World's Fair by the state of Connecticut. At the end of the fair, the building was purchased by George and Fanny Potter, who had it disassembled, moved to Lafayette, and then rebuilt in

its current location. In 1984, Bob and Ellie Haan purchased the mansion, which had fallen into disrepair, and dedicated the next several decades to restoring and repairing the historic structure as their family home. Their art collection, along with extraordinary examples of antique American Renaissance Revival furniture from the 1860s, formed the basis of the museum's permanent collection. In 2015, Bob and Ellie generously donated the building and grounds to a nonprofit organization to form the Haan Museum of Indiana Art. The sculpture garden behind the museum is free and open to the public at all times, and features work by notable Indiana sculptors displayed in a landscape of native Indiana flowers and plantings. It is maintained by volunteer gardeners, and also includes a picnic area with an outdoor stage for performances and special events.

10 REASONS TO VISIT CHASING THE LIGHT THIS FALL 🌟

The Haan is turning ten. T.C. Steele's centennial is this year. And we've brought together more than thirty of his paintings for one unforgettable exhibition. Here's why you need to see it.

10. It's our tenth anniversary as Indiana's only museum dedicated to art and culture by Indiana artists.

9. This year marks one hundred years since T.C. Steele's death, and we're honoring his legacy in a big way.

8. We're joining cultural partners across Indiana in shining a light on our state's most famous painter.

7. See Street Scene, the very first Steele painting our founders Bob and Ellie Haan ever purchased, back in 1992.

6. Get close enough to Still Life with Oranges to nearly smell the citrus. It's that good.

5. Chase the color thread yourself: green, orange, and purple turn up again and again across four decades of his work.

4. There's a peacock glowing in a window in one of the most surprising paintings in the show.

3. Our gallery invites you to slow down and notice what Steele noticed, painting by painting.

2. See more than thirty paintings spanning his entire career, from Munich to California to Brown County.

1. It's a sanctuary of the spirit. Come find your own moment of light.

Join us for the free opening reception on Thursday, August 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be cake, and museum founders Bob and Ellie Haan will be on hand signing copies of a special edition color catalog created for the exhibition. Chasing the Light: Inside the Luminous World of T.C. Steele runs through December 31 at 920 State Street, Lafayette.

If you're on our mailing list, you've probably already seen this incredible technique: pietre dure

(& if you're not, you're missing out!)

The Victoria & Albert Museum has an amazing video on the highly intricate technique known as pietre dure—Italian for "hardstones." This decorative art technique involves the precise arrangement & inlaying of cut & polished hardstones to form an image. Trust us—this video is well worth the short three & a half minute watch-time!

Additionally, consider checking out their interactive digital viewer of an 18th century pietre dure panel; click through the guided tour for more information about the piece & the technique used to create it, or choose the "free explore" option to zoom in & out as you please!

Wanna see an example of the pietre dure technique really up close & personal?? Don't forget about our current rotating exhibition, The Grand Gesture: American Renaissance Revival Furniture.

(A special thank you to our lovely docent Annabel Drazin for sharing this neat video with us!!!)

Some evenings are made to be remembered—Blooms, Bubbly, & Brushstrokes is one of them.

Join us at the Haan Museum of Indiana Art for a guided evening that blends art, inspiration, & a very good time. Glass of bubbly in hand, you’ll begin with a private tour of our celebrated sculpture garden—letting the shapes, colors, & spirit of the works spark your creative eye. Back in the studio, bubbly & bites keep the energy flowing as you design & arrange your own small floral bouquet, drawing on everything the garden stirred in you.

Then comes the canvas. With step-by-step guidance from our instructor, you’ll paint the flowers you’ve just arranged—no experience required, no pressure, just the pure joy of making something beautiful. You’ll leave with a painting to hang, a bouquet to take home, & an evening you won’t forget.
