Haan Museum of Indiana Art

Haan Museum of Indiana Art The Haan Museum is a 1904 historic mansion and home to an impressive collection of Indiana art. Steele and the Hoosier Group.

The Haan Museum is home to artwork by historic and contemporary Indiana artists, including an impressive collection of works by T.C. It's all displayed in a historic mansion that was built in 1904 for the St. Louis World's Fair by the state of Connecticut. At the end of the fair, the building was purchased by George and Fanny Potter, who had it disassembled, moved to Lafayette, and then rebuilt in

its current location. In 1984, Bob and Ellie Haan purchased the mansion, which had fallen into disrepair, and dedicated the next several decades to restoring and repairing the historic structure as their family home. Their art collection, along with extraordinary examples of antique American Renaissance Revival furniture from the 1860s, formed the basis of the museum's permanent collection. In 2015, Bob and Ellie generously donated the building and grounds to a nonprofit organization to form the Haan Museum of Indiana Art. The sculpture garden behind the museum is free and open to the public at all times, and features work by notable Indiana sculptors displayed in a landscape of native Indiana flowers and plantings. It is maintained by volunteer gardeners, and also includes a picnic area with an outdoor stage for performances and special events.

Join us at The Haan for our third annual STEAM at the Museum Summer Camp.

Are you ready to dive into a curious and creative mind-blowing week? Do you like to conduct experiments, be challenged by math problems, explore technology, and create art? Well, you will love STEAM at the Museum—a summer camp that immerses you in fun learning activities leading to designing and building an over-sized sculpture to display in the sculpture garden at The Haan Museum of Indiana Art.

Campers ranging from grades 4-8 will be divided into age-similar groups staffed by professional counselors and teachers. Every day begins with morning games followed by three focused activities utilizing math, science and technology. Campers break for lunch and free game time. They then report to their afternoon art studio sessions which will culminate in creating a large sculpture for temporary display at The Haan Museum of Indiana Art. Parents, guardians, friends and family will be invited to attend the end of camp art opening.

What activities can I expect? While specific activities may change, here are some highlights to anticipate:
- Yard games challenging kids’ engineering know-how
- Architecture tour with sketching and photo activities
- Utilizing simple machines & other technologies to design functional artwork
- Indiana art scavenger hunt in the museum

All activities foster an understanding and appreciation of how interconnected science, technology, engineering, art and math are. In fact, the highlight of each camper’s week is designing a large scale sculpture which requires planning, calculations and integrating technologies. The finished sculptures will be placed in The Haan’s sculpture garden to be enjoyed by visitors to the museum as well as campers’ families and friends. Campers then take their masterpieces home!

Please join us in celebrating eARTh Day: AIR! This community Earth Day event explores the importance of air through science, art, music, and environmental discovery.

The event will take place Saturday, April 11, from 11AM to 3PM at the Haan Museum of Indiana Art (920 State Street, Lafayette, IN) and is free and open to the public.

This year’s theme, Air, highlights the invisible forces that shape life on Earth—from atmosphere and climate to breath, sound, and the movement of wildlife across landscapes.

The celebration is co-sponsored by the Haan Museum of Indiana Art, Purdue University’s HIFI Lab at the John Martinson Honors College, Silver House at JMHC, the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future, and the City of Lafayette.

Visitors will experience a lively afternoon of activities across the museum grounds and sculpture garden, including:
- Live music on the garden stage
- Hands-on science and art activities for children
- Interactive exhibits and research demonstrations
- Nature and sculpture garden tours
- Community games and sustainability displays
- A presentation of the region’s State of Sustainability report

Researchers from Purdue’s HIFI Lab will also share how scientists study the environment by observing patterns in the atmosphere, soundscapes, and biodiversity, helping communities better understand and protect natural systems.

Set within the museum’s historic mansion and outdoor sculpture garden, eARTh Day: AIR invites families, students, and community members to celebrate Earth Day through curiosity, creativity, and shared discovery.

For questions about the event, contact Kristen Bellisario at [email protected].
