๐ŸŽจ LAA Members, Here's a Great Opportunity!
The Lafayette Art Association is excited to be exploring ways to collaborate with Basin Arts to create more opportunities for our members.
One of those opportunities is BARE Walls, a Basin Arts program that places local artwork in area businesses. It is a wonderful way to have your work seen, connect with local businesses, and earn ongoing income from your art.
Several LAA artists are already participating. Let's add even more LAA members to the program!
With the summer heat keeping us indoors, now is the perfect time to update your portfolio, gather photos of your artwork, and apply.
Learn more and apply at www.barewallslafayette.com.
Together, we can showcase the incredible talent of the Lafayette Art Association while strengthening our local arts community!

If you're feeling the summer doldrums creeping in, take a creative road trip through St. Landry Parish! Margo Baker recently did just that with two of her high school art students, searching for inspiration and a break from the summer routine.
Their first stop was Sunset, but arriving a little early and finding a few shops closed for vacation led them to make a spontaneous side trip to Opelousas. That turned out to be a great decision! Spotted Cat Antiques was a treasure trove of antiques and vintage finds. Definitely worth a visit.
Back in Sunset, they enjoyed lunch at the new Sunset Brewhouse! The boudin-stuffed grilled cheese was delicious, and the house lemonade was the perfect way to cool off.
Next stop was Grand Coteau and the gallery of Lafayette Art Association member Ted Bertrand at 166 Chatrian Street. Located in an 1850 home, Tedโ€™s gallery is a special place. He generously welcomed Margo and her students, sharing his work, his stories, and encouragement with the young artists. Be sure to check his gallery hours before visiting!
Next, they checked out Art Habit, a new art supply store filled with inspiration for every creative habit. They also enjoyed iced coffees and dessert at The Hive Market then explored The Kitchen Shop๏ฟผ (try the Gateau NaNa!) and Petite Rouge (all the nooks and crannies!) discovering beautiful treasures, welcoming owners, and plenty of creative inspiration!
They had hoped to finish the day at NUNU in Arnaudville, but time ran out. Another adventure awaits!
And the funny part? Margo didnโ€™t take a single picture all day! Youโ€™ll just have to make the trip yourself and experience these wonderful places firsthand.
Sometimes the best way to spark creativity is to step away from the studio, explore new places, and let inspiration find you. St. Landry Parish is full of creative people, unique shops, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

A big thank you to Calvary Thrift Store for picking up the remaining items from our garage sale! Calvary Thrift Store is a local nonprofit at 3315 Johnston Street that shares a portion of its proceeds with a variety of worthy causes in our community.
We're grateful to partner with them and help support their mission. If you haven't visited yet, stop by and check them out!

Bloom and Collage was such a fun workshop! We spent two creative days painting papers, making marks, exploring color, and building beautiful collages. Best of all, everyone left inspired, confident, and excited to continue creating on their own.

A New Chapter for the Lafayette Art Association

Dear Members, Friends, and Supporters of the Lafayette Art Association,

For more than six decades, the Lafayette Art Association has been a place where artists have gathered to learn, create, exhibit, encourage one another, and share the joy of art with our community. While the places we have called home have changed over the years, our purpose has remained beautifully constant.

Today, we are excited to begin a new chapter.

As we transition from our Auburn Avenue location, we are embracing a model that many successful arts organizations across the country have adoptedโ€”one that focuses less on maintaining a building and more on bringing art directly into the community.

Rather than being defined by a single address, we envision the Lafayette Art Association becoming an organization that can be found throughout Acadiana. Imagine art exhibitions in local businesses, educational programs at libraries, creative workshops at community centers, collaborations with museums and schools, demonstrations at festivals, and opportunities to share art in places where people naturally gather.

This approach allows us to invest more of our energy and resources where they matter most: supporting artists, providing educational opportunities, encouraging creativity, and building meaningful partnerships throughout our community.

Many thriving arts organizations operate successfully without a permanent building. They grow through collaboration, volunteerism, and strong community relationships. They bring art to people instead of waiting for people to come to them. We believe this is an exciting opportunity for the Lafayette Art Association to do the same.

Our mission remains unchanged:

The Lafayette Art Association & Gallery is dedicated to promoting, encouraging, and supporting the visual arts in Acadiana. By providing exhibition opportunities, educational workshops, and community events, LAA champions local artists while enriching the cultural spirit of our community.

That mission has never depended on a building. It depends on people.

We are grateful for the overwhelming support shown at our recent Membership and Community Meeting, where nearly 50 members, artists, and friends gathered to hear about this exciting new direction. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and the evening was filled with enthusiasm, thoughtful discussion, and a shared belief in the future of the Lafayette Art Association.

Those in attendance were invited to share their ideasโ€”not only for the months immediately ahead, but also for shaping our organization throughout 2027 and beyond. Their creativity, encouragement, and willingness to become active participants reaffirmed what has always been the heart of LAA: our members.

As we move forward, your ideas, talents, and enthusiasm remain more important than ever. Whether you are an exhibiting artist, a teacher, a volunteer, a student, a collector, or someone who simply appreciates the arts, there is a place for you in this exciting future. We will continue gathering ideas and creating opportunities for everyone to become involved as we write the next chapter of our Association together.

Although July 31 marks our final day at our Auburn Avenue location, it is not an endingโ€”it is a beginning. Like a well-loved perennial moved to richer soil, we believe the Lafayette Art Association will continue to grow, bloom, and flourish in new and wonderful ways.

Thank you for believing in the power of art, for supporting local artists, and for being part of our story. We are excited to continue this journey with you.

Please share your thoughts and ideas with me at [email protected]

With appreciation and optimism,

Cathy Mills
