Art, Creativity, and Immigrant Youth with Lakeya Afolalu

Young people across the U.S.โ€”and especially in Washingtonโ€”are growing up between languages, countries, and cultures. In this talk, explore how immigrant and transnational youth, particularly girls of color, use the arts to express their identities while navigating transnational lives and multilingualism.

Drawing from personal experience, community-based work in South Seattle, and youth stories, Afolalu highlights how creative expression becomes a vital space for self-expression, community, and voice.

About the Speaker:
Lakeya Afolalu is an assistant professor of language, literacy, and culture at the University of Washington. A Nigerian and African American scholar and leader, her work explores immigrant and transnational youth identities through literacy, language, and the arts. She has a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.

A toast to Hellamโ€™s! ๐Ÿฅ‚

A huge thank you to Hellams Vineyard for donating a truly special wine tasting for 25 guests to our Sapphire Dream Auction back in May, and for making the tasting so beautiful and memorable for our winning bidder and their guests.

Jeff and his wonderful team created a personalized tasting menu featuring seven wines, along with a gorgeous spread of cheeses, fruit, chocolates, and more. They even closed the shop for the evening, giving guests the chance to enjoy their beautiful indoor-outdoor spaces, including the deck overlooking the water, in a private and relaxed setting. โœจ

Weโ€™re also grateful to Hellamโ€™s for partnering with us for our Sapphire Dream Prelude Party, where their wines were a big hit with our guests! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’Ž

Do you enjoy working with kids? Are you interested in volunteering a few hours of your time each month to help connect Skagit Valley school students with art at MoNA?

The MoNA Link program is a partnership between the Museum of Northwest Art and local school districts. The commitment level is flexible and ranges 1-4 hours a month from October-May, but we are happy to work around your schedule! All training is provided.

Spots are still open for our Plein Air Drawing Workshop on the La Conner Waterfront with instructor Kristin Frost!

๐Ÿ“ In person class - meet at MoNA and walk down to the waterfront together!

Explore the sights of the La Conner waterfront in this plein air drawing workshop. Students can choose to work on a single long drawing, or make several small sketches of different views.

Working with graphite, students will learn how to make decisions quickly, create interesting compositions, and develop space and depth through value and texture layering. With charming storefronts, boats, and the iconic Rainbow Bridge, there are plenty of inspiring views to draw in beautiful La Conner.

Ages 16+, all levels of experience welcome. Supplies included!
