Upward Trend Is Shown On Canal - 1956 -

John W. Johnson, state superintendent of Public Warks, announced Aug. 6 that shipments on the State Barge Canal System are continuing their upward climb. The percentage increase last month was 3.8.

Mr. Johnson reports that as of July 27 - the third full month of operation - tonnage on the system totaled 2,084,730. At a corresponding period last year 2,088,749 tons had been transported on the Erie, Oswego and Champlain Divisions. The 0.19 per cent loss between 1956 and 1955 is the result of a delayed opening of the 522-mile system caused by high water.

During 1956, the system's Erie Division between Waterford and Tonawanda, has carried 1,312,227 tons. Tonnage totals for Oswego and Champlain Divisions are 348,124 and 424,379 respectively.

Bryant-Lowell -

The Bryant-Lowell societies of Jordan Academy were organized in the Spring of 1880, for the purpose of arousing greater interest in declamation, recitation and composition.

The entire school is divided into two sections, one bearing the name of Bryants, the other of Lowells. During each half term one Friday afternoon is devoted to the Bryants and one to the Lowells. The best two declamations, recitations, and the best three compositions of each day, chosen by a vote of the school, are reproduced upon the last Friday afternoon of the half term, called Bryant-Lowell day.

On this day two honors are given, one for the best declamation or recitation, and one for the best composition, the decision being left to a committee of three persons disconnected with the school. There have been thirteen Bryant-Lowell days since its organization, the Lowells receiving fourteen honors, and the Bryants thirteen.

During the past year there have been four Bryant-Lowell days. On the first, October 13, 1882, the honors were received by Miss Minnie Putnam for recitation, and by Miss Clara Waldron for composition. The programme was somewhat varied from the usual order by music from the Bryant Quartette, who did themselves great credit. The second day, November 23, 1882, the honors were received by Miss May Whiting for composition, and by Harry Otis for declamation. The third day, January 6, 1883, Miss May Broughton received the honor for recitation and Clara Waldron again took the honor for composition. The fourth day, May 11,
1883, the honors were received by Miss Jessie Mann for composition, and by Miss May Van Keuren for recitation.

One declamation, "Negotium Femina," was delivered with the satisfied air of
"homosum," and was especially interesting to the masculine part of the audience.

Each day has been both entertaining and pleasing to visitors as well as to scholars and teachers, while it has been a source of great good to those participating, teaching them to have confidence in themselves and arousing a desire to gain honor for themselves and for their society.
