Opening on Saturday, October 17th from 4-6pm!
Michael has been the gallery’s curator since 2021, and during that time, he has used the space to showcase artists from Ithaca and throughout Central New York. Now, this show puts his own work on the walls!
As curator of The Gallery at South Hill, I spend a lot of my time thinking about other artists and their work. Each month, whether it’s a solo, two-person, three-person, or group show, I’m focused on what other artists are doing and how best to present their work. Every artist I’ve shown over the past five and a half years has influenced my own paintings and prints in some way, and that influence can be seen in these pieces.
Figure drawing is central to my artistic practice. I organize figure-drawing sessions in the gallery and, during the warmer months, outdoors at various locations around Ithaca. After twenty years as a non-objective studio painter, I discovered figure drawing in 2012. While my work remains highly abstracted, each piece begins with the figure model in a pose. My paintings and prints often veer far from that initial drawing, but the figure provides a starting point—a foundation from which I can expand and explore my work.

The opening reception for Diane Woodhull Newton's one person exhibit "But Where Will I Park?" will be coming next Sunday, September 13th from 4-6pm. A must see exhibit! Diane says about the work: Coming up with a title for an art exhibition can be a challenge but with this show, I looked at my drawings of roads and parking lots and then thought of the words on my favorite t-shirt BUT WHERE WILL I PARK? and it all came together.

For years, I’ve considered roads and parking lots—although human-made—integral to the landscape. I’m drawn to the compositional elements they provide—lines and stripes on pavement, road signs and words on buildings—geometry and graphics that come into play with the trees, hills and foliage of traditional landscape. I use my camera to photograph what attracts me—the pictures are “sketches” to draw from—some on large black Arches paper with soft pastels and others become small drawings done in oil pastel. And sometimes the photograph I’ve taken remains just that—printed and displayed as you can see in this exhibition.

Not just any photograph will become a drawing…without certain light, shadow, or color it is merely ordinary. But when these elements are manifest, the work has emotional/psychological content and mood and perhaps some mystery…they coalesce to make a drawing I want to share.

In addition to landscape, there is some abstract work here…you might say I’m all over the map which actually I am. I was born and raised in Nebraska, I lived in Kansas and Colorado and now I’m in New York after a few years in Boston. From the time I was able to hold a crayon to when I was in college and graduate school, I drew. I went to art school in the 1960s—it was the time when Abstract Expressionism prevailed. It influenced me then and it’s still in me.
