Food has a way of telling stories - about where we come from, the people we love, and the memories we carry with us.

Our latest Rooted in Flavor gathering brought those stories to the table at Terrace by Mix Mix , where guests explored Filipino American culture through food, history, and conversation.

Chef Ross Pangilinan shared Filipino flavors and traditions through the evening’s menu, while Dr. Oliver Wang helped guide a thoughtful conversation about Filipino American history, identity, and the evolving place of Filipino cuisine in the American culinary landscape.

Guests also shared what cultural food means to them - from family traditions to the tastes and dishes that immediately bring back memories of home.

We’ve been listening and our community has given us so much to think about.

As part of our ongoing Listening Tour, the Asian American Museum at Great Park brought together business, community, and philanthropic leaders in Los Angeles for a meaningful conversation about the future of AAMGP, hosted at the Japanese American National Museum Takeuchi Democracy Center.

We heard thoughtful ideas, meaningful perspectives, and a shared excitement for what this museum can become. These conversations will help inform how AAMGP grows - from the stories we tell and the experiences we create to the ways we engage and serve our communities.

While every idea cannot happen at once, we’re holding onto what we heard and will continue revisiting these ideas as our resources, programs, and permanent home take shape.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared your perspective, and continues to believe in this vision.

A special thank you to the Japanese American National Museum for welcoming us, and to Chief Operating Officer Kenyon Mayeda for taking the time to give our group a tour of the museum following the session.

🍽️ Here’s a sneak peek of the culinary delights that await you at Rooted in Flavor at TERRACE by Mix Mix!

Chef Ross Pangilinan has created a menu inspired by heritage, family traditions, and contemporary interpretations - from Filipino bites and seared albacore kinilaw to market fish pinakbet and halo-halo, paired with wine from Callaway Vineyard & Winery.

Chef Ross will also be joined by pop, hip-hop, and Asian American culture authority, Oliver Wang for a conversation exploring the stories, memories, and cultural influences that shape the way we experience food.

🎙️ Meet Dr. Oliver S. Wang

We're honored to welcome Dr. Oliver Wang as our speaker for Rooted in Flavor.

A writer, author, curator, and Professor of Sociology at Cal State Long Beach, Oliver has spent more than three decades documenting the stories, histories, and cultural traditions that shape the Asian American experience. His work has appeared in NPR, the Los Angeles Times, Vibe, Wax Poetics, and many other publications.

He is the author of Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area and Cruising J-Town: Japanese American Car Culture in Los Angeles, bringing thoughtful insight into the ways culture, identity, and community are preserved across generations.

During Rooted in Flavor, Oliver will guide a conversation exploring how food serves as a powerful expression of heritage, memory, and belonging.

Our newly unveiled multi-phase development plan marks an exciting step forward in creating a place where history, culture, education, and community come together to celebrate Asian American stories and inspire future generations.
