🏮 A night of shared traditions and new connections at Great Park!

AAMGP was proud to be part of the City of Irvine’s Mid-Autumn Festival, bringing our community together to explore Asian cultures through food, tea and play.

From discovering the versatility of pomelo and the craftsmanship behind Vietnamese mooncakes to observing a Japanese tea ceremony and gathering around the mahjong tables, guests had opportunities to learn, taste and connect throughout the evening. ✨

Thank you to Chef Jessica VanRoo, 1983 Bakery, Omotesenke Domonkai of Southern California and Ruby Dragon Mahjong for sharing your knowledge and traditions - and to everyone who celebrated with us!

🍈 Pomelo is often considered the fruit of the Mid-Autumn Festival, traditionally shared among families after enjoying mooncakes. Even the peel has a place in the celebration, with children sometimes wearing the hollowed rind as a hat—a playful tradition passed down through generations.

At the City of Irvine’s Mid-Autumn Festival, Chef Jessica VanRoo, CCMP, NBC-HWC, will bring these traditions to life through an approachable culinary demonstration. Chef Jess serves as executive chef at UCI’s Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, where she brings together food, culture and well-being through engaging culinary education.

Using pomelo, she’ll create a salad, dessert and snack: a pomelo salad with Thai-style and miso dressings, a lightened pomelo sago and candied pomelo peel. Along the way, she’ll share practical ideas for building flavor, minimizing waste and recreating each dish at home.

🥮 1983 Bakery brings creativity, craftsmanship and heartfelt tradition to the art of mooncake making. Founded by baker Huynh Gia Tuan, the bakery is known for thoughtfully handcrafted mooncakes that celebrate the flavors, stories and spirit of the Mid-Autumn season.

Join us at the City of Irvine’s Mid-Autumn Festival, where 1983 Bakery will lead a mooncake demonstration and share how these intricately crafted pastries are made. Stop by to learn more about this beloved tradition and the role mooncakes play in celebrating family, reunion and the full moon.

🍵 Omotesenke Domonkai Southern California is dedicated to preserving and sharing the Omotesenke tradition of Japanese tea. Rooted in centuries of cultural practice, the way of tea brings together hospitality, mindfulness and artistry through the principles of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility.

🀄Ruby Dragon Mahjong is a love letter to its founder’s Toisanese and Cantonese roots, inspired by mahjong traditions passed down through generations.

Through fun and welcoming experiences, she introduces players of all levels to Hong Kong–style mahjong while honoring the game’s cultural roots and creating meaningful connections within the community.

Community input is at the heart of building the Asian American Museum at Great Park.

Earlier this summer, we brought together business, community, and philanthropic leaders from across Orange County for an AAMGP Listening Tour session - creating space to listen, learn, and hear directly from the community we hope to serve.

The conversation brought forward thoughtful perspectives on the stories we should tell, the experiences we can create, and the role AAMGP can play in preserving and celebrating Asian American history, art, and culture for generations to come.

Every conversation helps shape our vision. While not every idea can happen at once, we’re holding onto what we heard and will continue to revisit these insights as our programs, resources, and permanent home at Great Park take shape.

Thank you to Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California for hosting us at your office and to everyone who joined us and generously shared your time, ideas, and expertise.

This museum belongs to our community - and we’re building it together.

Food has a way of telling stories - about where we come from, the people we love, and the memories we carry with us.

Our latest Rooted in Flavor gathering brought those stories to the table at Terrace by Mix Mix , where guests explored Filipino American culture through food, history, and conversation.

Chef Ross Pangilinan shared Filipino flavors and traditions through the evening’s menu, while Dr. Oliver Wang helped guide a thoughtful conversation about Filipino American history, identity, and the evolving place of Filipino cuisine in the American culinary landscape.

Guests also shared what cultural food means to them - from family traditions to the tastes and dishes that immediately bring back memories of home.

Thank you to Chef Ross, Dr. Oliver Wang, TERRACE by Mix Mix, and everyone who joined us around the table - and to Wells Fargo and Callaway Winery for supporting this special evening.
