We at the Eagle Rock Railroad Historical Society are saddened to learn of the passing of long-time member and former Society president, Leo Harker. Leo's contributions and impact to the Society are immeasurable. Among those many contributions are several scratch-built structures on the ERRHSI layout, including the Idaho Falls passenger depot, Idaho Falls freight depot, West Yellowstone passenger depot, and the Idaho Falls roundhouse. He won 1st place for the roundhouse at the 2003 NMRA Pacific Northwest Region 3rd Division Spring Meet. He also owned the original Idaho Falls modules which are still in place as part of the ERRHSI layout. Without Leo, the Society would not be what it is today.

Leo's presence and influence will be felt for many years to come. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to his wife, Norma, and their family.

Please take a moment to enjoy these photos of some of Leo's work.

In addition to track and scenery work, we have been working on some electronics projects as well. We have installed a completely new control system, moving away from EasyDCC to an NCE system. The new system provides better short circuit/overload protection as well as some advanced features like advanced locomotive consisting (pairing locomotives together to run as a tethered set).

Doug has been building some LED indicator panels to aid operators by providing visual representation of selected routes through turnouts, and one to visually indicate where a short circuit is when one occurs (such as when a car derails on a turnout). As an additional feature, Phil installed automatic voice announcements to accompany the visual short indication.

In addition to our primary HO scale railroad, we also have an N scale layout which is located above the Hermann/Staging area of the HO layout. Construction on this new N scale railroad began about a year and a half ago. The project was proposed by Casey, and Steve has done most of the track work, with a track plan designed by Doug and benchwork built and installed by Paul and Dave. Justin, Doug, and Dave have also assisted with track work. This layout doesn't represent any specific areas in Southeast Idaho, but provides Society members who are interested in N scale a place to run trains. The track plan is designed to allow both continuous running and some basic operations/switching scenarios. Steve has just started installing some masonite in preparation for a backdrop.

Another project is the reconstruction and completion of the Gilmore area of the layout. Paul, Austin, and Justin have been working on this for a while. They have reconstructed the benchwork/sub-terrain to better support the track and scenery, laid new track, and are installing new turnout controls. Justin has now moved on to the scenery phase, and is currently working on mountains and rock faces. Great work, guys!

One of our awesome junior members, Austin, has been spearheading this project to represent the Lorenzo bridge on the ERRHSI layout. Due to space restrictions he's had to reduce the number of bridge sections. Austin designed, planned, and proposed the project and has done the majority of the work, with Paul, Dave, and Wyatt pitching in to help. The project has involved benchwork modifications, new track, and of course modeling and installing the bridges. Austin has also installed new fascia for the upper level to provide more clearance for the bridge. We're excited to see this coming together and can't wait for the scenery phase!

Phil, Paul, Justin, and Austin have been working hard replacing the track and sub-roadbed in the South Idaho Falls area of the layout. This was a much-needed improvement. The existing track was nearing 30 years old, and had multiple issues including being unlevel, electrical issues, and gauge issues. This includes a new crossover that we're dubbing "The Austin crossover" because it was his idea. Great work, guys!

In conjunction with Wyatt's new graded run, Paul scratch-built these great wooden trestles for the Victor area of the layout, and Justin painted them.
Not everyone can scratch build like this. Great work, guys!

There has been a lot of work happening at the ERRHSI since our October show. Several projects are underway or have been recently completed.

Wyatt designed and is building this new graded run which allows trains to bypass the hidden helix that transitions from one elevation to another. This improves the operation of longer, heavier trains which can be troublesome in the helix. It also keeps the train visible the entire time. Beautiful benchwork and track work, Wyatt!
