Have you ever heard a mammoth? Yeah, we clearly haven’t either 🦣😉

So, what did the mammoths sound like? Nobody really knows for sure, although scientists, sound designers, and artists have tried to rebuild mammoth voiceboxes to simulate their calls. One interpretation sounded like a “chest-thumping growl.”

We recently hosted Dr. Christiana Ryder, a post-doctoral researcher from Texas A&M University, who spent two days studying our Wasden Collection — artifacts and fossils from the Wasden Site, also known as Owl Cave. This collection is helping scientists tackle one of prehistory's biggest mysteries: what caused the sudden disappearance of Ice Age giants like mammoths at the end of the Pleistocene? Using a technique called near-infrared spectroscopy, Dr. Ryder can use light to discover valuable information about a fossil. Since most existing data on this extinction comes from just a few well-studied sites like La Brea, Idaho's Wasden Collection helps fill a critical gap in the research. We're proud that our collection is playing a role in advancing our understanding of the past, one fossil at a time! 🦴🔬

Have you ever wondered if the museum is three separate buildings? It sort of is, but it isn’t. MOI was originally housed in what used to be the Carnegie library, but in 2003 an addition was built (that big glass part) that tripled the museum’s size. Then, in 2021, another addition was built that included a new exhibit hall and education center, doubling the museum’s size. Although it might look like several different buildings from the outside, everything inside is connected. Between two traveling exhibitions and one large permanent exhibition, there is lots to see!
