Meet Jacob, our Blacksmith! 🔨🔥

Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Jacob has worked at Alabama Constitution Hall Park for over a year. In addition to demonstrating at the Blacksmith shop, Jacob likes leading tours through the park. His favorite tour is the Holiday Lantern Tour, which is coming up December 13th!

Jacob has a degree in History from the University of Alabama and enjoys watching Alabama football and basketball.

💡His favorite historical fact learned at ACHP? Huntsville historical figure Sheriff Stephen Neal, born in 1773, only received 65 votes at a voting poll of 3,000 in a Huntsville election.

Here’s an Alabama history fun fact to share at this year's Thanksgiving celebration! 🍂🦃

Did you know Alabama didn’t officially celebrate Thanksgiving until 1858? That year, the governors of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas declared November 25th a day of thanks.

Later, in 1863, President Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday on the last Thursday of November. But it wasn’t until 1939 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it to the fourth Thursday, where it’s celebrated today.

Thankfully, we can confirm that there is no spooky story here! We believe that a dentist settled down in what we now know to be Alabama Constitution Hall Park - hence the teeth! However, if you have your own spooky theory, comment below! And please check out our website to book a Halloween tour - or else! 👻

🐴 Here at the park, we have a carriage house that visitors would keep their carriages and horses in! Did you know that it was not until the 1790s that drivers of the carriages would drive on the right side of the road? This was to have better control over the horses and ensure the carriage would not fall in the ditch. It was not until the Civil War that all states drove on the right.

It's Flag Day!
⭐️ In 1819, Alabama was admitted as the 22nd state of the Union. However, there was never a U.S. flag with 22 stars. Maine became the 23rd state only three months after Alabama. Congress did not approve the next official flag until July 4, 1820, so this 23-star flag was the first to represent Alabama as a state. It remained the official flag of the United States for two years.
