Hudson, NY – 510 Warren Street Gallery is very happy to be presenting a show of photographs by John Lipkowitz titled “My Heart Belongs to Africa” beginning Friday, July 31st and ending on Sunday, August 30th. Join us for a reception with the artist on Saturday, August 1st from 2:30 to 5:30. All are welcome.
Lipkowitz and his wife have recently returned from their ninth safari trip to Africa and for him, in his own words, “this was the last one.” No longer physically able to walk any distance, other travel has become nearly impossible, but, safaris only require minimal walking and 8-10 hours a day sitting in a jeep. Once this last batch of photographs have been processed, only dreams will remain.
This current exhibit contains photographs mostly from their trip to Kenya in November 2025 where, for the first time, they spent several nights inside hides equipped with beds and a guide who conveniently tugged on toes when animals approached the waterhole abutting the hide’s large windows. Nighttime photos of several species of cats and other animals are iconic images that Lipkowitz was desperate to capture. They are stunning images that capture the essence of how photography can show us animal behavior not often available in the wild.
Other images from this trip and previous ones are also shown in this “labor of love” that has captured the Lipkowitz imagination for many years. For him, wildlife photography is the “it” and a “soul to soul” experience in which, after time, patience and discernment, being meets being. Just for an instant, with the click of the shutter, magic can happen.
