Stephen Mallon’s “Whale,” featured in “Leviathan River
Whales and the Making of Hudson,” depicts the barely visible fuselage of US Airways Flight 1549 emerging from the Hudson River during the salvage operation. The image evokes a breaching whale while recalling the “Miracle on the Hudson,” when the plane safely landed on the river near Manhattan and all 155 people aboard survived. It also connects that extraordinary event to the City of Hudson farther north, named for the same river. As the only photographer with exclusive access to the salvage, Mallon created a powerful visual record where history, place, and metaphor converge.

Front Room Gallery is pleased to present Leviathan River, Whales and the Making of Hudson, a group exhibition that explores the profound and often overlooked relationship between whales, maritime industry, and the cultural formation of Hudson. Through contemporary artistic practices, historical reflection, and material imagination, the exhibition traces how the presence, both real and symbolic, of whales shaped the identity, economy, and mythology of this river city.

Founded in 1784 by whalers and merchants from Nantucket and other New England ports, Hudson emerged as one of the earliest inland centers of American whaling enterprise. Within just a few years of its founding, the city boasted dozens of vessels and a thriving port economy, fueled in large part by the extraction and trade of whale oil, spermaceti, and related goods. Whale oil illuminated homes and streets; spermaceti candles symbolized refinement and progress. In this way, whales were not distant oceanic beings, but intimate agents in the construction of Hudson’s urban and economic life.

“Leviathan River” Traces Hudson’s Whaling History at Front Room Gallery
A group exhibition examines how the whaling industry shaped the city’s identity, economy, and mythology.

“Front Room Gallery opened “Leviathan River” on August 1, a group exhibition built around a piece of Hudson’s deeply romantic history: the city’s brief but formative run as a whaling port.

Hudson was founded in 1785 by a group of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard whaling families who relocated inland specifically to escape the disruptions of the Revolutionary War, and for a stretch of the late 18th and early 19th centuries it was one of the busiest whaling harbors on the East Coast—an origin story that shaped the city’s street grid, its architecture, and its early wealth.

The group exhibition uses contemporary art, historical material, and material imagination to trace how the presence of whales—both literal and symbolic—shaped the identity and mythology of the river city. The gallery frames the maritime industry’s relationship to Hudson as profound but overlooked, and the show’s premise is corrective: connecting the city’s current cultural identity back to an industry most visitors, and probably a fair number of residents, don’t associate with the city at all.” - Jamie Larson
