On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Phil Buehler presents “COUNTENANCE: The 9/11 Missing Posters” an exhibition of photographs documenting the missing-person posters and flyers that covered New York City in the aftermath of the attacks.
Buehler photographed these posters as they appeared throughout the city, on walls and fences, and outside firehouses, churches, hospitals, armories, and other public places. He photographed approximately 500 posters and flyers, creating an extensive photographic archive of the city’s collective search for those who were missing.
“COUNTENANCE” brings together a selection of 144 photographs from that original archive. Together, the photographs document the faces and names of those being sought, as well as the extraordinary visual landscape of remembrance that emerged across New York in the weeks and months following September 11, 2001.

This is a particularly poignant exhibition because the photographs preserve not only individual faces and names, but the physical traces of how an entire city searched for its missing in the weeks and months after 9/11.
