Ballads of light

Well, what does it mean
Those lights?
I’m here to see those lights.

Arthur Russell & Allen Ginsberg

Inhabited by spectral figures, Vicente Grondona’s universe unfolds through landscapes of unsettling ambiguity. His characters seem suspended between emergence and disappearance, while horses, lovers, flowers, and forests resist any explicit narrative.

His painting enters into dialogue with Impressionism, academic painting, Pointillism, and naturalistic drawing, only to fracture them from within. Technical refinement gives way to a wild, almost shamanic search, where pigment, light, and gesture become instruments for invoking the invisible.

Grondona is also a singular sculptor. Working with charcoal, he transforms the residue of fire into primitive faces and bodies. The material preserves both the trace of the tree and the memory of its burning, giving rise to an archaeology of the present where the human figure emerges from darkness.

Across painting and sculpture, Grondona returns us to something elemental: the body, the landscape, fire, and the mysterious force of matter.

His work does not explain itself. It continues to pulse in the half-light.

Copper pigment and oxide on Japanese
paper.
68.9 in diameter

Titan takes its name from one of Saturn’s moons and
consists of a circular piece made from paper coated with copper pigment, temporarily installed on the abandoned island of El Frontón off the coast of Lima. Exposed to birds, salinity, wind, humidity, and atmospheric variations, the work was conceived to transform continuously through its interaction with the environment. Rather than representing landscape, Titan functions as an active surface of environmental inscription, where oxidation, erosion, and animal presence directly participate in the production of the
image. Between territorial intervention and ephemeral
objects, the piece establishes a simultaneously cosmic and terrestrial relationship between matter, time, and
perception.

photography, Jacques Derrida
144 x 490 cm / 36 x 54.5 cm each (framed)

Derrida’s Royal Road Test begins with Royal Road Test (1967), Ed Ruscha’s work indirectly inspired by Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, in which a typewriter is thrown from a moving automobile and then meticulously documented across the desert landscape. If Kerouac transformed the highway into a symbol of freedom and transformation, Ruscha responded with a cold and demystified vision of the American journey: fragments,
evidence, and record.

Martin introduces a third voice into this chain of
references through Jacques Derrida and the typed
transcription of Copy, Archive, Signature: A Conversation on Photography. Through text, carbon paper, and solar exposure, he reconstructs scenes from Ruscha’s book as images eroded through repetition and material transfer. Where Ruscha found emptiness and dispersion, Martin reactivated persistence, memory, and meaning.

Series, 2026
Lithographic ink on wall, texts. Processed through
INk 1.0 software
Variable Dimensions

Destino Manifiesto is produced with the amount of ink used in official documents that expanded the territory of the United States. The selected documents are four treaties and one bank check that gained the United States Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Phillipines, Alaska, Florida, and Texas.
The measurement of ink is taken using INk 1.0, a software developed by the artist to calculate the area, volume and weight of the ink in manuscripts and printed documents from digitized images of the original documents. Through this work , ink—the historical technology of inscription, administration, and control—ceases to function as an invisible medium and acquires physical body.

Suns in the Shadow, 2022
Hand-carved and polished Santa Ana marble,
bronze casting, steel structure, polyurethane
paint, and polyurethane lacquer
210 x 450 x 42 cm

Suns in the Shadow (2022) brings together Santa
Ana marble, bronze, and steel in a modular
structure that simultaneously recalls mountainous
landscapes, territorial models, and geological
cross-sections. The bronze discs embedded in the
surface refer to so-called pyrite suns, mineral
formations produced through long sedimentary
processes.
Partially inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ The Book of Sand, the work introduces a reflection on
infinite scales and deep temporalities that exceed any
definitive system of classification. Rather than
representing nature, the piece appears to operate from within its internal logic: pressure, stratification, accumulation, and material transformation.
