Co-presented by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and R & Company, "Pigeon Crib: Houston Edition" is the first solo exhibition of work by celebrated ceramic artist Roberto Lugo in Texas.

Lugo is known for infusing traditional ceramics with a 21st-century street sensibility. His defiant, genre-mixing practice confronts the colonial legacy embedded in the history of ceramics, while affirming clay’s universal resonance across cultures and centuries.

Case Study Close Look: Ato Ribeiro

In “Home Away From Home #10,” (2023) Ghanian-American artist Ato Ribeiro translates symbolic modes of communication from across the African diaspora, shifting traditionally textile-based expressions into complex, geometric wooden tapestries. His interlocking patterns reference Ghanaian adinkra and kente cloth traditions, as well as African-American quilts that were coded with secret messages and maps along the Underground Railroad.

Adinkra are visual representations of concepts and proverbs traditionally stamped on cloth or ceramics. Kente cloth conveys social status, spiritual beliefs, and cultural heritage through its distinctive, intricate strip-woven patterns and color combinations. In “Home Away From Home #10”, Ato incorporates Adinkra symbols throughout, including Nsaa (excellence and authenticity), Nkyinkyim (life’s twisting path), and Owuo Atwedee (the universal ladder of death).

Ato draws inspiration from renowned fiber artist Sonya Clark, whose work is displayed in the exhibition, “We Are Each Other,” on view in HCCC's adjacent galleries. He says, “We’ve always used textiles to share stories…my job is to make the world remember these contributions.” By meticulously cutting, gluing, curing, and slicing repurposed wood into assemblages that invoke the communicative power of African diasporic textiles, the artist is also engaged in a mode of archiving cultural knowledge.

This month, after nearly nine years at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Education Director Tarina Frank is leaving to begin a new chapter as the Drawing and Painting Visual Arts Teacher at The Kinkaid School this fall. In her new role, she will be teaching middle-school art as well as advanced drawing and painting to upper school students.

Tarina first came to HCCC as a resident artist working in metal and jewelry from 2012 - 2013. Over the years, her unique artwork and jewelry pieces were showcased in Asher Gallery and in exhibitions such as “Sawed, Soldered, Constructed: The Work of the Houston Metal Arts Guild” and “Designing Motherhood.” During her professional tenure, Tarina led many of our beloved programs, such as Hands-on Houston and monthly adult workshops, while building meaningful collaborations with resident artists, local craft practitioners, guilds, and community partners. Her deep knowledge of plants and growing also shaped her innovative programming, which included making the Craft Garden a vibrant and educational centerpiece for our visitors. Tarina will be sorely missed, but we are excited for her next chapter!

Jeniffer Perales Garcia, who has been promoted to Education Manager, will oversee HCCC’s education programming and initiatives moving forward. As a bilingual museum educator and cultural programmer with more than six years of experience, she is excited to take on this new level of responsibility. Congrats, Jeniffer!
