koelsch gallery is pleased to announce a dual exhibition of works by Houston artists Gail Siptak and Kelly Moran. Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, September 10th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. As always, admission is free.

In Rescue, Gail Siptak illustrates wildlife and humankind floating aboard meandering vessels at sea. Although without essential instruments, her folksy figures remain at ease as they are painted to safety. In Time Keepers, Kelly Moran displays her large-scale paper dolls and mixed-media assemblages of framed collages and globes. Throughout the works, she incorporates time-telling objects—evoking dialogue on time, how it is measured, and our relationship to it. Together, the two artists bring us into their imagined worlds, defined by personal whim, character, and color.

Rescue and Time Keepers will be on display through October 10, 2026.

Available works by Shane Drinkwater through koelsch gallery of Houston, Texas.

The Australian-based artist offers an ongoing collection of mixed-media works. Often described as “cosmic cartographies”, Drinkwater’s compositions evoke the aerial landscapes and solar systems of Medieval manuscripts, rendered in acrylic, ink, and collage. His works are currently on display in part of koelsch gallery’s ongoing exhibition, “Raw, Unfiltered, Intuitive Creators”, closing August 22, 2026.

“There is beauty in repetition. Seeing the same motif produced again and again is like a symphony of form. And while it’s satisfying to see carbon copies, it’s perhaps more compelling when created by the human hand. As hard as we may try, a pattern drawn by hand will never be completely perfect—and that’s part of its charm. Artist Shane Drinkwater creates works on paper that are replete with repeats. He uses dots, plus signs, arrows, and straight lines to form structured compositions that read like maps and diagrams of worlds we don’t yet fully understand.”

Works by Eddie Arning featured in koelsch gallery’s latest exhibition, “Raw, Unfiltered, intuitive Creators”, featuring works from 11 different outsider, folk, and visionary artists. Join us today for an opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. As always, admission is free.

“Arning, like many self-taught artists, used magazine advertisements and illustrations as models or inspiration for his work. Nonetheless his work is highly individual; the link with the original source is often difficult to discern. Most of the print sources for Arning’s drawings have been saved. Institutionalized for most of his adult life, Arning was introduced to drawing in 1964 by a hospital worker who supplied him with materials. Arning’s medium from 1964 to 1969 was Crayolas. In 1969, he switched to oil pastels, or “Cray-pas.” Regardless of his media, Arning always worked in the same manner, covering the entire surface of the paper with dense strokes of color. He stopped drawing in 1974; a year after leaving his nursing home.”

With some works created as early as 1964 and others as recent as 2026, the exhibition spans more than six decades while remaining unified by a shared spirit of uninhibited creativity, self-taught artistry, and the incorporation of found materials. Through this thoughtfully curated exhibition by franny koelsch, visitors are invited to step into the personal worlds of both emerging and established figures within the outsider movement and its surrounding scenes. “Raw, Unfiltered, Intuitive Creators” features works by Purvis Young, Eddie Arning, Big Al Taplet, Nancy Josephson, Claire Cusack, Gerard Cambon, Richard Kurtz, Sally S. Bennett, Darden Smith, W. Tucker, and our newest artist, Shane Drinkwater. Thank you Glasstire for featuring koelsch gallery and Kelly Moran in the article “Two Art Fairs Come To Austin: A Review of Affordable Art Fair & Friends Fair”, published June 1st. In the article, Renee Lai writes, “I enjoyed the pieces shown at koelsch gallery by Kelly Moran of Western-themed resin-covered paper works. They resembled cutout, interchangeable clothes that you would put on paper dolls, and were almost twice as large as you’d expect them to be, roughly 24 inches high. Found objects at the scale of the figures were embedded onto most of the outfits. They felt bombastic, partially because of the sheen, and leaned thoroughly into camp. In a time when so many people enjoy dressing in a Western-coded style (I myself am not immune to this), they felt very apropos to the moment.”

“The Sky is Bluer Than You Think”

koelsch gallery is pleased to announce an artist talk and live musical performance by Darden Smith on Saturday, May 30th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. In honor of the closing of his latest exhibition, “The Sky is Bluer Than You Think”, Smith will perform songs from his multi-media project Western Skies and discuss his experience as both a self-taught artist and musician. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and participate at their choosing. As always, admission is free.

Featured works are from Smith’s body of work, A Common Prayer (2024 – 2025), a series of mixed-media works created with gouache, graphite, marker, pen, and soil collected from the artist’s travels in Telingua, Texas. At times, the works are accompanied by quotes from conversations overheard or Smith’s personal writings. Recurring motifs of flora and greenery reflect early childhood encounters with nature, experienced in his mother’s elaborate gardens and memories of wading through the tall grasses of the Texas landscape. In A Common Prayer, the artist’s reverence for the natural world is felt through his immortalization of fleeting moments and memory.

koelsch gallery returns to Austin, Texas, for for the third edition of the Affordable Art Fair, Austin! We will be showcasing contemporary works alongside more than 55 local and international galleries. All artworks are priced between $100 and $12,000 and represent both established and emerging artists. In addition to general admission, the fair feaetures late evening programming on Friday and Saturday, as well as family activities on weekend mornings. Our booth will feature works from artists Lance Letscher, Kelly Moran, Carlos Hernandez, Nancy Josephson, Geoff Winningham, Melinda Buie, Gail Siptak, and Jeff Wheeler.
