Twice a year, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens welcomes leading scholars to explore the stories, objects, and ideas that have shaped American decorative and fine arts.

On October 24 at 1:30 pm, historian and author Frances Kolb Turnbell presents an engaging lecture examining Louisiana during the Spanish colonial period (1763–1803), a transformative era marked by shifting populations, evolving trade networks, complex relationships among communities, and the lasting impact of the American Revolution. Through Louisiana’s unique position within the Spanish Empire, the discussion offers fresh insight into the region’s role in both global conflict and the emergence of the early American economy.

Following the lecture, meet the author at the book signing. Copies of "Spanish Louisiana" will be available for purchase.

Join us for one of the MFAH’s most anticipated family celebrations, a day filled with art, creativity, and connection to the natural world. This annual festival celebrates the environment, native flora, and the 40th anniversary of the Cullen Sculpture Garden, transforming the Museum grounds with hands-on activities, performances, and larger-than-life artistic experiences.

This year, four Houston Latinx artists unveil new temporary large-scale sculptures created especially for the festival, highlighting the Museum’s commitment to Latin American and Latino art, as well as art of the Indigenous Americas.

Come behind-the-scenes with Per Knutås, Chairman of Conservation, as he reveals the meticulous process of treating "Orange and Black Wall," a monumental painting by Franz Kline from the 1960s. 🎨

Beginning September 30, "Orange and Black Wall" joins two additional Kline works on view in the North Foyer of the Law Building through January 24, 2027.
