It's the last weekend to see "Joe Overstreet: Taking Flight" at the Menil Collection.

Renowned for his innovative approach to non-representational painting, American artist Joe Overstreet consistently sought to intertwine abstraction and social politics. The artist made a significant contribution to postwar art, positioning abstraction as an expansive tool for exploring the idea of freedom and the Black experience in the United States.

Plan to visit through July 13. Admission is always free.

In the Menil's recent acquisition, "Play Yer Part" by Christina Quarles, the artist explores identity. Through her complex landscapes, she asks how categories of belonging, like race and gender, fail to capture the nuances of human experience. As the artist has said, “I create images that remind us that reality is constructed.”

"You do not want to compete with art, and you still want to give character to a museum; you have to work on the immateriality of the museum—light, vibration, proportion." —Renzo Piano

Natural light was important to Dominique de Menil's vision for the museum. To illuminate the galleries while shielding the artwork on display from the Texas sun, architect Renzo Piano designed the building's signature roof "leaves."

Read about the Menil's newest show, "The Space Between Looking and Loving: Francesca Fuchs and the de Menil House," in ELLE DECOR.

"The exhibition is an exercise, for artist, curator, and visitor, in unlearning the norms of arrangement and reconnecting with the emotive power of visual art and the way in which it is displayed."

A new exhibition of Francesca Fuch's work at the Menil Collection tells us.
