January 23rd and my crazy azaleas have blooms on them, thinking it's spring! Well, they (and the roses) are in for a rude awakening because we are supposed to get a hard freeze this weekend in the Houston area. So are millions more folks across the country. I hope everyone stays safe and warm!

This was a fast, first study of a face to get to know it a bit better with the intent of doing another more careful drawing later. (Which never has happened... yet.) It's not very accurate, I made his face too narrow. I used to enjoy sketching in red pencil, but I prefer a toned paper rather than white like this one. I'll have to do some more red pencil sketching... one of these days when I'm able to again.

Today is our 53rd wedding anniversary! What a wonderful blessing my dear wife, Charlotte, has been to me! As Prov. 31:10 says, "Who can find a capable wife? Her value is far more than that of corals." vs 11,12: "Her husband trusts her from his heart, And he lacks nothing of value. She rewards him with good, not bad, All the days of her life."  This is SO true in her case!

vs. 25,26: "She is clothed with strength and splendor, And she looks to the future with confidence. She opens her mouth in wisdom; The law of kindness is on her tongue."  Again, so true! I especially don't know how I could have survived these past three years of terrible TBI tribulation in particular without her strength, her positive spirit and outlook, her wisdom and kindness.

vs 28 says: "Her children rise up and declare her happy; Her husband rises up and praises her."

And here I am, friends, rising up and praising her! As vs 29 says: "There are many capable women, But you—you surpass them all." That's exactly how I feel. I love you with all my heart, Charlotte Bailey! 🥰❤️😍 Happy Anniversary!

For this week's 'Throw Back Thursday' post, I present "Bayou Near Meadows Place,"  watercolor on 100% cotton rag paper.

The painting measures 19" x 14 1/2", the frame is 25 3/4" x 21 5/8".

This scene no longer looks like this. The hedge row, trees and the apartments that are barely visible from this angle were all removed, and a multi-story building was put in. The bayou is still there, though.

This should have been a Way-back-Wednesday post-- because it went to its 'forever home' yesterday! [Yay!! 😁]

But I didn't get around to posting it until today so I guess it is a 'Throwback Thursday' post instead.

This little watercolor is 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" on a light weight, slightly ivory-toned paper with no sizing, so it was extremely absorbent. I finished it back on 7/26/2021, almost 4 years ago now. I had not painted with watercolors for quite a while when I did it, so it was really a warm-up and get reacquainted exercise, but I kind of liked the fresh, loose, spontaneous look of it. Others have told me they liked it too. 😊

I'm happy it is now in a home where it is very much appreciated.

Here's a 'Many Moons ago Monday' post. (Is there such a thing on IG? If not, there oughta' be, 🤣 and so here's one for you!)

This is from the same old sketchbook as the previous 2 posts. I had previously used a gell-plate to press on  3 separate layers of acrylic paint on this page, so it was prepared ahead of time for something to be added on top of that at some future point. Then, much later, I decided to do a Pigma Micron ink pen sketch of this lady actress. Pens force you to do line hatching marks to simulate shading, so it's rather challenging to try to use ink pens for depicting a female face. (In fact, I wonder if it's even possible for you viewers to recognize her? 🤔)  Name that actress. 😊👌

Another page out of one of my old sketchbooks. These pages are 5 3/8" x 7 3/4". I had previously sealed the page with shellac, thinking I might try ink or acrylic on it, but I ended up using charcoal, white charcoal and a bit of graphite pencil on this sketch.

This is known as Eagle Rock to many Arizonans in the northwest part of the state. It can best be seen on the south side of Highway 68 as you drop down out of the mountains descending down to Davis Dam and Lake Mohave on the Colorado river. However, THIS view of Eagle Rock is on the way back up, and it does not look as much like an eagle from this direction. However, I realized while sketching this that you can see the back side of an eagle from this angle also: the head is obvious, as are the shoulders. The long diagonal cleft in the rock face creates a taper on the right side of his back down to his tail feathers at the bottom. Or, if you prefer to use the entire structure, the wider splayed angles could be his back with his wings partly open

Some of my paintings' journey, from getting my custom, handmade frames to a collector's wall.

Every now and then, I am privileged to either be a guest in an art collector's home where some of my art resides, or one of my collectors sends me a picture of my artwork on the collector's wall in their home. I am always humbled and honored when others choose one of my paintings to enhance their home environment and to live with on a daily basis. I am extremely grateful to my collectors. 🙏😔

Showing the study process using quick compositional sketches to help plan the finished painting. The bottom sketch was the larger, more expansive view of these mountains, but I felt it wasn't strong enough. So I did the quick top sketch, a cropped revision, and decided on that for the painting.
