The Gite Gallery is a commercial art gallery that features beautiful and original paintings, hand carved wooden statues, bronze sculptures, tribal masks and hats, brightly colored textiles, vintage accent furniture and more, all from sub-Saharan Africa. Located in a charming two-story brick house built in 1943, The Gite Gallery has been described as one of the most elegant galleries in the United States and was voted Best Art Gallery by the Houston Press in 2014.

Join us at The Gite Gallery on Saturday, October 17, from 10 am to 6 pm for Bras for Bravery, a drive dedicated to honoring breast cancer survivors and collecting bras to support them on their journey.

Every bra you donate brings dignity, confidence, and strength to those in need. Survivors are the heroes of this story, and through your generosity, we can stand beside them as they rebuild their lives.

What to Donate:
Post-surgery bras
Sports bras
Everyday bras (all sizes needed)

Together, we can show that no woman fights breast cancer alone.

Hello Art Lovers,

Fall is here, and hopefully we’ll finally get a little relief from the Houston heat.

One of the things I love most about fall is the number of art festivals, fairs, exhibitions, and events that pop up around the city. I encourage you to get out, explore, and discover some new art and artists.

I’m always amazed by the level of talent we have right here in Houston. Our city has a thriving and diverse art scene, and I’m proud that The Gite Gallery is part of that community.

If you haven’t visited us in a while, please stop by. I’d love to welcome you back and share our collection of African art with you. There is always something worth discovering.

I interviewed Jasmine Guy back in the 1990s, and this photo takes me right back to that moment.

More than 30 years later, Jasmine is back as Whitley Gilbert, and instead of simply celebrating her return, people on social media are debating how she has aged.

I find that troubling.

Of course she looks different. So do I. So do you. That’s what happens when we’re fortunate enough to live another 30 years.

Jasmine is now 64. She has spent decades acting, dancing, directing, raising a family, creating art and living a life.

We have become so accustomed to filters, fillers, cosmetic procedures and carefully edited images that perhaps we’ve forgotten what aging actually looks like.

Jasmine responded to the criticism by saying, “The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older.” She’s right.

Why do you think we have such a difficult time allowing women, especially women in the public eye, to simply grow older?
