Sicardi Ayers Bacino Houston-based Sicardi Gallery features modern and contemporary work by artists from Latin America. www.sicardigallery.com

Sicardi Gallery was founded in Houston in 1994 by María Ines Sicardi. Today the gallery is a partnership that includes Allison Ayers and Carlos Bacino as well as María Ines Sicardi. The gallery features modern and contemporary work by artists connected in diverse ways to Latin America, and who range from emerging and mid-career artists to major art historical figures like Gego and Jesús Rafael Soto. These artists have exhibited widely in museums and institutions internationally and are regularly included in art fairs and major art world events, including Documenta and major biennials from São Paulo to Venice. We work directly with our artists, coordinating exhibitions in the gallery as well as in museums and other institutions, and also support public art projects and publications. Since its inception the gallery has sought to reveal challenging links that connect recognized modernists and younger artists from across Latin America, and to explore these relationships in monographic and thematic exhibitions that bring the work to ever-wider audiences in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. This is also achieved through lectures and other projects that complement our exhibition program.

Jorinde Voigt: Trust and Rain is currently on view Sicardi Ayers Bacino

Trust and Rain brings together works made between 2012 and 2023. Liebe als Passion XIV (2013) alludes to Niklas Luhmann’s book Love as Passion: The Codification of Intimacy (1982), which Voigt used as an occasion to visualize processes of spontaneous image-finding, asking herself: “What kind of territories of the imagination are being constructed? Which images are being communicated? Which mental images are being evoked in me?” Trust and Rain in June II (2020–21), by contrast, is quintessentially Voigt — oneiric, scientific, rhythmic, and recursive, depicting biomorphic structures, or perhaps microscopic plastic debris, adrift in a greenish pictorial space. Who, or what, should we trust?

The Uruguayan painter, muralist, sculptor, teacher, writer, and theoretician, Joaquín Torres-García was born in Montevideo to a Catalan father and a Uruguayan mother. When he was seventeen years old, his family returned to the father’s homeland in Catalonia, Spain. Torres-García would not return to Montevideo for another forty-three years, living in Spain, France, the United States, and Italy.

In 1931, Torres-Garcia painted, Constructif dédié a Manolita. The artist was living in Paris at the time and the painting was dedicated to his wife, Manolita.
