Freedmen’s Town Museums

Freedmen’s Town Museums Freedmen’s Town Museums Houston is a part of Rutherford B.H. Yates Museum, Inc. Freedmen’s Town Museums, also known as the Rutherford B. H. But our work continues.

is located in the Fourth Ward of Houston, Texas. We were founded in 1996 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the preservation, education, and archaeology, related to the history of Freedmen’s Town. Insensitive, mass redevelopment, demolitions of historic structures and indifference to the community’s significance have created difficulties for preservation efforts. Therefore, we are raising funds to preserve Freedmen’s Town with the goal to keep history alive for many years.

Did you know a funeral home was established in Freedmen’s Town? In the late 1930s, Herman L. Bradford and Milton A. Pruitt co-operated and owned a funeral home at 1303 Andrews Street at the intersection of Matthews Street. The two men would later part ways in the early 1940s. Mr. Pruitt opened a new two-story facility in the 1950s around the corner at 1219 Matthews Street.
