The African American Library at The Gregory School The African American Library at the Gregory School officially opened its doors on Saturday, November 14, 2009. ...the library is housed in the former Edgar M.

Located in the historic Freeman’s Town, the African American History Research Center (AAHRC) is housed in the former Gregory Elementary School. The school served as the first public school for Blacks in Houston. The first library of its kind in Houston and one of the few African American libraries in the country, the AAHRC mission is to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich history and culture of African Americans in Houston, the surrounding region, and Texas.

Today in Black History ... January 11th

1892 - William D. McKoy of Indiana was appointed minister to Liberia on this date.

1954 - Eugene Kinckle Jones, the first Executive Secretary of the National Urban League, died in New York on this date. In 1906, Jones was one of the seven co-founders of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

1961 - Riot, University of Georgia. Two Black students Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes were suspended but a federal court ordered them reinstated. They returned to classes on January 16.

1976 - Hank Aaron, baseball legend, received the 60th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date for his achievements in baseball, for establishing the home-run record (715), and for his outstanding sportsmanship-making him a good role model for young people. Aaron would go on to hit 755 homeruns.

1864 - Scientist and inventor George Washington Carver, born.

1915 - Classical Conductor Dean Dixon born.

1936 - Thelma Joyce White, civil-rights activist, was born in Marlin, Texas.

1957 - Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), founded.

1966 - Julian Bond, communications director of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, denied seat in Georgia House of Representatives because of his opposition to Vietnam War.

1935 - Earl G. Graves, publisher of Black Enterprise magazine and entrepreneur, born.

1946 - Death of poet Countee Cullen (42), New York City.

1811 - US troops suppress slave uprising in two Louisiana parishes near New Orleans.

1836 - Educator and first Black woman college graduate in the US, Fannie M Jackson was born.

1922 - First Black to acheive that rank in the US Army, Col Charles Young, dies in Lago.

1989 - The oldest intergration law suit in the US was settled when the St. Helena Parish schools were officially integrated. The suit was originally filed by a John Hall and the NAACP in 1952.

2002 - Shirley Franklin is sworn in as the first African American Mayor of Atlanta and the only African American female mayor of a major American city.

1950 - The James Weldon Johnson Collection opens at Yale.

1890 - Inventor, WB Purvis, patents the fountain pen, 1890.
