Happy ! Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kim Markham , a ceramicist on Molokai and 10 year Hawaiʻi Craftsmen member.

Kim is one of the founders of Molokai Arts Center along with potters, Dan Bennett, Emillia Noordhoek, and Betty West in 2012. The Molokai Arts Center is funded with grants, donations, volunteer labor and an annual event called the SoupRBowl. Every year Kim makes over a hundred unique soup bowls for the fundraiser (she’s gotten pretty good at making bowls!). She also participates in Hawaiʻi Craftsmen challenges and exhibitions to create something beyond strictly functional craft. You’ll find Kim at Raku Hoʻolauleʻa, connecting with artists that she can invite to teach at Molokai Arts Center.

Kim loves flowers and began making vases when challenged by her husband’s cousin (who owns a heliconia farm) to make a vase that wouldn’t tip over when filled with top heavy tropical flowers. Her bottom-heavy orb form lends itself to endless reinterpretation as both vase and sculpture. Kim is currently experimenting with papers and plant fibers in combination with stoneware to create water tight vessels that stand alone as mixed media sculptures when flowers are not available.

Welcome to , our new series featuring our members and their incredible work.

We're thrilled to kick off this series with Derek Bencomo , an artist working in wood, based on Maui. He's been a member of Hawai'i Craftsmen for 40 years!

Derek grew up surfing the waves of California. After graduating, he traveled the South Pacific, surfing exotic locations. Upon his return to the United States, Derek settled in Maui, Hawaii, where he discovered woodworking and the beautiful Hawaiian woods. With no experience, he figured it out one step at a time, and within a couple of years, Derek started exhibiting turned wood bowls, vases, and platters made of exotic Hawaiian woods. Wanting to create an identity unique to himself, he started to carve his wood turnings, taking inspiration from his experience in the water — the waves and all the sea life below the surface. The results were vessels that danced and moved with a wave-like fluidity. Derek's work began receiving attention from collectors and museums across the United States.
