Historic Johnson Farm A heritage education center, we offer school field trips, group tours, animals, nature trails, picni Sallie Johnson. Mrs.

Beginning with Oliver Moss in 1874, the Johnson Farm has a long history in Henderson County. The original farm house was built between 1876 and 1880 but our period of significance begins in 1913 with Mrs. Sallie Johnson ran the farm as a summer boarding business from 1913-1958, along with her two sons Leander and Vernon. The brothers closed the boarding business when their mother died but they remained active in Henderson County for the rest of their lives. They had a vision that one day their farm would become an educational resource for the school children of Henderson County, teaching them about the farming life that is so integral to the history of this Appalachian region. Today we honor their legacy by acting as a cultural heritage center owned and operated by Henderson County Public Schools. We offer historic home and grounds tours, field trips and heritage festivals throughout the year. We are also home to the Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists in the old boarding house. Visit our website for more details or stop by for a tour today!

Huge thanks to HHS junior Grant Palmer for spending countless hours at the farm over the past couple of months doing a number of service projects. He cleared the wooded area by the potting shed and made a path to access the building. He cleared the building of vines and cleared out plants that were growing on the roof. He also made new signs for the potting shed and corn crib. Finally, he painted the corn crib and outdoor classroom so these buildings can match the other recently painted buildings. All of this work will allow students to soon be able to use the potting shed and area right around it to learn all about plants, soil, seeds, and more. Thank you Grant for your service and dedication to the farm!

For the last few days, the farm’s director has been at the Southeastern Museums Conference. (SEMC). For 75 years, SEMC has provided professional development and networking for museum professionals across the Southeast United States.

This year, North Carolina was proud to host the conference in Winston-Salem. Conference sessions included volunteer management, building an effective annual event calendar, insights for museum educators, and more. And of course there was time to explore local museums like Old Salem Museum and Gardens, Korner’s Folly, Historic Bethabara, Reynolda House Museum, and Kaleidium.
