Selfridge Military Air Museum

Selfridge Military Air Museum Selfridge ANG Base traces it's beginnings to the very dawn of the USAF. We will celebrate those achievements and bring them back to life for all to enjoy.

This is a private organization. It is not a part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and it has no governmental status. The Michigan Air Guard Historical Association (MAGHA) and the Selfridge Military Air Museum were formed by a group of Air National Guard officers and enlisted personnel to help preserve the heritage and traditions of the Michigan Air National Guard, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and the units that are/or were stationed there.

Our Restoration Crew is having a very busy summer as they continued the cleaning and repainting of 4 different aircraft in or Air Park. Those aircraft are our Navy A-4 Skyhawk light attack fighter bomber that is now finished, our Air Force C-131 Transport, our Navy S-2 Anti Submarine Warfare aircraft, and our Air Force F-102 fighter.

The plans are to complete the work on these 4 aircraft this summer and to make use of the good weather days for the rest of our season restoring other aircraft in our Air Park.

We extend our thanks to everyone who attended our 2026 Car Show today! Classic cars and trucks were parked beside the historic aircraft in our Air Park and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves even with a few sprinkles of rain present from time to time.

Our appreciation goes out to Bubba's 33 BBQ, Texas Roadhouse, and to Faygo pop for providing the food and beverages. Also to our Rosie volunteers who were serving ice cream floats. A special thank you goes out to the Selfridge Military Air Museum Volunteers who donated many hours of effort in making this special day possible.

Yesterday was a momentous day for Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Ground breaking ceremony was conducted to start the construction of the runway extension and re-routing of Rossor Hwy (M-59) around this new construction. This is all being done in preparation for the arrival of the New KC-46A refueler and teh F-15EX Eagle II missions at the base.

Winter Sports in Michigan

Those of you that have spent some time in Michigan are aware that we have world class winters. As a result, winter sports are very popular here with our Detroit Red Wings being one of the original 6 NHL franchises.

The Red Wings weren’t the only wings enjoying the winter weather back in the day; our own Army Air Corps pilots had their own version of winter sports at Selfridge Field.

In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Selfridge Field was the site for several tests exploring the viability of using and maintaining aircraft in cold weather environments. The 1st Pursuit Group was at the center of these early experiments, equipping their aircraft with ski’s to operate on snow covered fields. In 1925, the 1st Pursuit Group flew to Oscoda in Norther Michigan to explore winter weather operations.

In 1930, the 1st Pursuit undertook an operation called the “Arctic Patrol” in January, completing a 3,500 mile round trip flight in their P-1 Hawk biplane fighters from Selfridge to Washington State and back with stops in Montana, North Dakota and Idaho. One of the pilots was Paul Wurtsmith, a Michigan native and later a Major General. Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Michigan was named after him.

In the 1930’s, the 1st Pursuit Group flew the iconic P-26 “Peashooter”, a metal, low wing monoplane fighter. The P-26 was adapted to winter conditions by adding ski’s to the fixed landing gear. The skis were configured so that the aircraft could land on a runway or field as well as a snow or ice covered landing areas.

While ski’s added a capability to operate in harsh winter weather, it did come with some weight and drag penalties which degraded aircraft performance. As you can also probably imagine, landing an aircraft on a snow or ice covered field with skis could get a bit sporty, and required experienced pilots.

Today, the Air Force still operates a ski equipped aircraft, the LC-130 used to support Antarctic operations, but it all started right here at Selfridge 101 years ago.

81 years ago today, on August 9, 1945, the U.S. conducted the second nuclear strike on Japan at Nagasaki during WWII. The two nuclear strikes were significant factors that forced the Japanese capitulation on August 15, 1945 (August 14 in the US), and the formal, signed surrender that took place on September 2, 1945 onboard the USS Missouri.

Dust Off those clubs and get into the swing of things at the great golf event. Proceeds from this outing help support three worthwhile non-profits, and the Selfridge Military Air Museum is one of them. So, come out for a great afternoon of food, drink and camaraderie. Hopefully, the museum can field 2 - 4 person teams and take home some great prizes.
