Statement
I typically consider childhood making experiences as a place to mine imagery.
Sentimental crafts like flour ornaments, Valentines, and painted rocks influence my
modular sculptures and installations. Themes of collection, curio cabinets, and
constellations are prevalent in my current body of work. With an emphasis on material
exploration, I utilize a range of eclectic materials including paper pulp, clay, found rocks,
beads, and wood. This array of small objects often feel like charms or tchotchkes. Like a
cast of characters on a stage, these objects interact with each other within a larger
composition. Each object is imbued with a sense of personhood and individually
transcending the limitations of their form and embodying something magical.
My visual research is focused on material exploration and object-making. The specific
mark of my hand across materials plays the most significant role in connecting my art
objects conceptually. I am interested in the ways the impression of my hand translates
to disparate mediums, forming a library of personal marks and gestures. This involves
freely combining materials that cohere into a multitude of small-scale paintings,
drawings, and sculptures. Along with the mark of my hand, I am also considering
constellatory thinking as a means to weave narratives between objects within a
composition.
