How did a home on Fort Myers Beach get fresh water in 1906?

For the Case family, the answer was a rainwater cistern.

Located just outside their 249-square-foot Tudor-style kitchen, the 12-by-12-foot cistern could hold approximately 3,200 gallons of water. Rainwater collected from the kitchen roof was directed into the cistern and accessed through a hand pump for everyday needs like cooking, drinking, and cleaning.

The original cistern was demolished in the 1950s, but its story didn’t disappear. During the restoration of the Mound House, a reproduction cistern was constructed in 2006 on the same spot where the original once stood.

In this reel, you’ll see a historic 1906 photograph of Milia Case beside the original cistern, along with photographs documenting the construction of the reproduction cistern in 2006 — exactly 100 years later.

Today, visitors can see the reproduction cistern and stand in the same place where the Case family collected their water more than a century ago.

Stop by the Mound House and discover more pieces of early island life for yourself.

The Mound House we see today is the result of more than a century of change.

Beginning as a small kitchen and dining room in 1906, the home was expanded in 1909 and transformed again in 1921. Over the decades that followed, new owners continued to adapt the property for scientific research, modern living, and the changing needs of the time.

Today, many of those later alterations are gone. The Mound House has been carefully restored to reflect its 1921 appearance, giving visitors a glimpse into this important chapter of the home’s history while still preserving the stories of the transformations that came before and after it.

From 1906 to 1909, 1921, 1947, and 1952, each period left its mark on this historic Fort Myers Beach landmark.

Come explore more than a century of change at the Mound House.

Weather preparedness took center stage during the latest installment of our Our Natural World: Think Global, Act Local Summer Lecture Series.

We were pleased to host WINK Weather Authority meteorologist Katie Walls, who offered practical insight into hurricanes, El Niño, severe weather, and lightning safety. Her presentation gave attendees a clearer understanding of Southwest Florida’s weather and how to remain prepared throughout the season!

We sincerely appreciate Katie for spending the evening with us and sharing her expertise. Thank you as well to everyone who attended and contributed to another successful community program at Mound House.

Our lecture series continues! Follow our page so you don’t miss the announcement of our next featured speaker and topic.
