Most people know that the Stranahan House has taken many forms over its 122 year history, but not everyone knows that one of these forms was the Waters Edge Inn.

During the depression era, Ivy Stranahan rented the entire first floor of the Stranahan House to some of Fort Lauderdale's winter visitors. Mrs. Miller Ward operated the Water’s Edge Inn at the house from 1935-1937. It was briefly named "The Swiss Chalet" in 1938, until the house was leased to the Blackwell family in 1939, who then opened the Pioneer House Restaurant on the first floor.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at the Historic Stranahan House Museum!

When Frank and Ivy celebrated Thanksgiving together for the first time at the turn of the 20th century, dinner was cooked on an old-fashioned wood range stove with ingredients foraged and hunted from their surroundings. Turkey and venison served as the meat for the meal, while pumpkin pie and coontie starch pudding were served for dessert. As more and more families moved to the area, Ivy recalls families bringing bountiful picnic lunches to share at the House of Refuge #4 Coast Guard Station on the beach.

We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday! We will be closed today, but have an 11:00 tour scheduled for tomorrow morning.

We recently had almost 200 students from Viginia Shuman Young elementary visit Stranahan House! We love hosting field trips, whether from Broward County Public Schools, local private schools, or homeschool co-ops! The kids were fascinated by the House, loved making (and eating!) their own butter, and had a great time exploring the grounds during the educational scavenger hunt.

We are now booking Spring 2024 field trips, reach out to our Education Director Missi at [email protected] to book today!

Did you know Frank Stranahan's Trading Post was originally farther east along the New River?

In 1893, Frank's cousin Guy Metcalf established a tent camp and post office adjacent the ferry crossing at Tarpon Bend, near the present day Colee Hammock neighborhood.

South Florida business moguls William and Mary Brickell technically owned the land the camp sat on, and eventually persuaded Frank to move the camp and the ferry upriver with a gift of ten riverfront acres: where the Stranahan House currently sits today.

The Stranahans and the Brickells were both incredibly influencial in the development of south Florida as we know it today. Learn more about Mary Brickell at this Friday's History Happy Hour! Tickets and more details on our website! https://stranahanhouse.org/history-happy-hour-november-10th-2023/

Our next History Happy Hour is coming up fast, we're less than a month away!

On November 10th, we are so excited to host author and South Florida historian Cesar Becerra to discuss his new book: Orange Blossom 2.0.

South Florida matriarch Mary Brickell's importance and influence on the development of South Florida has long been overlooked and undervalued by historians. Attourney (and Brickell's very own great granddaughter) Bea Brickell will join Becerra in discussing the true history of Miami development, highlighting Mary Brickell's integral nature.

Tickets can now be purchased on our website! Don't forget, Stranahan House members get at least 2 free tickets included with their membership! https://stranahanhouse.org/history-happy-hour-november-10th-2023/

Downtown Civic- Neighborhood Meeting this Weds, 10/18 at 6:30pm at Historic Stranahan House Museum ! Important Downtown Infrastructure and Transportation Updates from Commission and City Staff!

Neighbors!

We are having an in-person Downtown Fort Lauderdale Civic Association meeting this Wednesday evening, October 18 at 6:30pm under the tent at the Stranahan House, 335 SE 6th Ave. All are welcome!

As you may know, there have been some significant issues with infrastructure in our downtown neighborhood. Our neighbors at the WaterGarden Condo were on a boil water notice for 22 days straight. We will be having special guests District 4 Commissioner Warren Sturman, City of Fort Lauderdale Director of Public Works Alan Dodd, and Deputy Director of Transportation Milos Majstorovic to provide important updates and take questions.

Apart from the downtown emergency water main replacement, we will be discussing plans for Las Olas and Huizenga Park, the Tunnel and Tunnel Top Park, downtown crime stats, new developments planned, and more. If you have something of particular interest that you would like covered, please email me at [email protected].

Please remember to renew your voting membership ($15 for individual/$25 for household) at www.dflca.org

All residents are welcome to attend this meeting whether you are a member or not.

Did you know that Ivy Stranahan practiced Yoga?

According to an interview with her niece Alice, “In the mornings, she (Ivy) would come to my bedroom and she did yoga. She was ahead of her time. She did all of these exercises- bending, stretching, and bending over…She was double jointed, I think…She really was a very limber life little lady.”

Join us on the Stranahan House patio Thursday, November 2nd for Yoga by the River led by Brynlee from Coastal Yoga and Nutrition!

10/03/2023

The Stranahan House staff is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Evelyn Ellis. Evelyn, or affectionately known as Ev on our calendar, was a truly wonderful docent and friend to the house.

“Evelyn was such a warm lady. She was always here to answer my questions and hold my hand when I was learning.” Jenny Belt recounted as she talked about her first few months as executive director. “She was also so patient and kind with all the students who would come onsite for field trips. We’re so sad more children won’t be able to learn from her love of our museum.”

For over a decade, Evelyn was an integral part of our volunteer family. Her dedication knew no bounds—whether it was donning Victorian attire for our Christmas tours, lending a helping hand in the office or at our programming events, or creating cherished memories of butter-making with thousands of children over the years.

Evelyn, you will be so missed.

If you are interested in the memorial service details, please contact Missi at [email protected].

This is where it all began!

The Historic Stranahan House Museum is the oldest and most historically significant home in Broward County. Home of Fort Lauderdale’s Founding Family, Frank and Ivy Stranahan, the structure served as the pioneer community’s trading post, community center, bank, and post office. Later became the Stranahan’s residence and then a boarding house, restaurant, and now a museum. The museum is open 7 days a week for tours and conducts educational programs, special tours, and parties throughout the year. #StranahanHouse #IAmHistoric
