Nowadays, there’s no shortage of beautiful boats, river tours, and water taxis traveling along the New River. During the Stranahans’ early days, however, transportation on the water looked quite different!

Take a look at this historic photograph and compare the vessels of the past to those we see today. While much has changed over the years, the New River remains at the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s story!

Throughout history we've enjoyed the beautiful beaches in Ft. Lauderdale, and Ivy Stranahan was no stranger to taking her own trips over to the sandy shores! As we have our own beach days this summer, remember that trips like this connect us to our history without us even realizing!

A huge thank you to all of the wonderful guests that joined us for the last History Happy Hour of the season! Dr. Evan P. Bennett ended the season on a high note with a fantastic presentation on the history of women's suffrage in Florida. Thank you to him as well for being an amazing guest and speaker!

While we're done for the season, we will be back! Stay tuned for our opening event next season in October!

A glimpse into the past ✨

In 1987, the Historic Stranahan House Museum was featured on the cover of *The Best: Gold Coast Fashion & Lifestyle* in a beautifully illustrated tribute to Fort Lauderdale’s oldest surviving home. Framed by the New River and lush old Florida landscape, this artwork captures the timeless beauty and history of the Stranahan House during its early restoration era.

The Historic Stranahan House Museum is home to a fully handmade miniature recreation of the Stranahan House, complete with furnished rooms, tiny figures, and even life in the attic! Donated in 1983, the intricate model was designed and constructed by Dewey Carpenter, with interior design by Joyce Miltenberg. Every detail offers a charming glimpse into the past on a miniature scale.
