Happy National Leathercraft Day! Leathercrafting is an art that requires patience, precision, and expertise. In this video, you’ll see Leopold’s favorite chair, one of Stickley’s enduring bestsellers, being crafted by hand. The intricate tufting process alone takes four hours to complete. Today, we recognize and celebrate the skilled craftspeople, past and present, whose dedication keeps these traditions alive.

On display at The Stickley Museum is a special chair, based on the Eastwood Chair, a design created and enjoyed by Gustav Stickley. This version is significant as it was made for the Dalai Lama. The chair's proportions were increased. A design that allows its sitter to sit cross-legged. The leather used to create the cushions is a color that closely matches the Tibetan monks’ robes. In July 1900, Gustav Stickley-already falling under the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England-surprised the Grand Rapids tradeshow with his line of “New Furniture.” It marked a bold shift from his earlier work and showcased just how experimental he could be.

The catalog showcased nearly a dozen flora‑form tables inspired by Art Nouveau, Japanese‑style plant stands named Tokio, Mikado, and Yeddo, and a charming mix of Bungalow chairs, tables, and settees.

Several of these designs are still produced by Stickley today, a testament to their lasting appeal and Stickley’s enduring influence on American furniture design.
