Today we celebrate National Poetry Day by sharing an excerpt from Anne Cleveland Cheney’s poem The Answer and cover art from the October 1913 issue of The Craftsman.

“So many poems to be read,
A world fames fair and true?
Good Sir, I know, but overhead,
A sky is arching blue;
And branches wave across the bright,
All glorified, and seem to write
A lyric for my very soul,
Upon a vast, eternal scroll;
If now, good Sir, I try to read,
I sure must stop my ears to heed,
And hush the beating of my heart,
That both great songs be kept apart!"

This illustration by Robert Kiely depicts a dining set from the L. & J. G. Stickley Cherry Valley collection. Inspired by regional furniture traditions and eighteenth-century English examples, the Colonial Revival line reflects a rich blend of influences.

The Corner Cupboard reveals the Dutch influence found in Cherry Valley’s early settlements and remained in production from 1937 through the mid-1950s. The ladderback chairs and drop-leaf table also proved enduringly popular, appearing in catalogs from 1928 through the mid-1970s and mid-1980s.

In celebration of American Archives Month, we’re opening the doors to the L. & J. G. Stickley archives. Throughout the month, we’ll share objects and stories that illuminate the company’s craftsmanship, ingenuity, and history.

During World War II, as American factories shifted production to support the war effort, L. & J. G. Stickley manufactured a wide range of furniture for the U.S. Navy. Some pieces were based on the company’s earlier Mission and Colonial Revival designs but adapted for use at sea. Trestle tables, for example, were bolted to the floor to keep them securely in place and fitted with linoleum tops, raised edges, and open corners—practical features that prevented objects from rolling off while allowing water to drain.

Today we honor the memory of Alfred Audi, whose vision and determination helped revive L. & J. G. Stickley and preserve a proud American craft tradition.

Alfred and Aminy Audi were recognized twice in the Congressional Record for their extraordinary work — first in 1977 for saving a “proud, quality conscious industry,” and again after Alfred’s passing on September 29, 2007, celebrating his lifelong commitment to quality, design, and the Arts & Crafts revival.

Alfred’s passions extended far beyond the factory floor — from bowling alleys to squash courts to the golf course — and he excelled wherever dedication and heart mattered.

He is remembered not only by his family, but by proud members of the Stickley family whose lives and livelihoods he helped shape.

Sharing two images today that capture his spirit: Alfred at the opening of The Stickley Museum in 2007, and Alfred holding a trophy from one of his favorite pastimes.

His legacy endures.
