Hill-Stead is noted for its 1901 33,000-square-foot house filled with art and antiques. Pioneering female architect Theodate Pope Riddle designed the grand house, set on 152 hilltop acres, to showcase the Impressionist masterpieces amassed by her father, Cleveland iron industrialist Alfred A. Hill-Stead is one of the nation’s few remaining representations of early-20th-century Country Place Estate

s. Collections include original furnishings, paintings by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, James M. Whistler and Mary Cassatt, as well as numerous works on paper and Japanese woodblock prints. Stately trees, seasonal gardens, meadows, over three miles of stone walls and blazed hiking trails accent the grounds. A centerpiece of the property is the circa 1920 sunken garden designed by Beatrix Farrand, today the site of the renowned Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. Looking for plans this weekend? Screaming Orphans—an award-winning all-sister Celtic folk & pop band from Donegal, Ireland—are bringing their incredible four-part harmonies, infectious energy, and unique sound to Hill-Stead this Friday, August 21 at 6pm.

Happy Fourth of July from Hill-Stead! 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate not only the 250th anniversary of the United States, but also the birthday of Alfred Pope, whose vision helped shape Hill-Stead into the special place it is today.

In honor of this momentous occasion, this year's Juried Members Exhibition is dedicated to the people who make up the United States—their stories, experiences, and creativity.

The museum will be open tomorrow, July 5, so we hope you'll stop by to experience the exhibition. Please note that Hill-Stead will be closed July 6–9 and will reopen on July 10.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day, and we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Celebrate CT Trails Day at the Hill-Stead Museum this weekend! 🌿

Hosted by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association, CT Trails Day is the largest National Trails Day celebration in the nation, featuring free outdoor activities across the state.

The Hill-Stead will mark the occasion with a special talk on its historic gardens and trails along the Metacomet Ridge, including the history of the Sunken Garden. Weather permitting, the talk will include a short walk around the grounds.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the trails, enjoy the gardens, and come prepared with comfortable shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, and tick checks after visiting.
