Daylight savings ended today! One artist who was exceptionally good at capturing daylight was John Joseph Enneking. Noted as “the sunset painter,” Enneking was an American Impressionist who took much of his inspiration from nature. His "A Woodland Stream" glows, illuminated by rich hues and warm colors that create a serene, natural atmosphere.

John Joseph Enneking, “A Woodland Stream,” 1897, Oil on canvas, 32 x 45. (Framed 52 x 65 in.), Private Collection

Happy November! The pictured work, "November Mosaic", dates to the prime of artist Willard Metcalf's career and, like all his best paintings, depicts a seasonal New England landscape.

Instead of a swift accumulation of colored brushstrokes such as one might find in the work of his Impressionist contemporaries William Merritt Chase and Edmund Tarbell, Metcalf selected a slower, more deliberate painting speed to build this scene, hence the apt reference in the title to a "mosaic."

Willard Metcalf, "November Mosaic," 1922, Oil on canvas, 26 x 28 in., John Butler Talcott Fund, 1925.01

Happy Birthday to Frederick Childe Hassam (1859-1935)!

A celebrated American Impressionist painter, Hassam’s body of work encompassed both natural landscapes as well as depictions of urban scenes, with “Le Jour du Grand Prix” serving as an example of the latter. Although one of many American painters living in Paris, where this work was created, he was the only to choose the contemporary city as his primary subject.

Our History

The New Britain Museum of American Art’s founding in 1903 entitles the institution to be designated the first museum of strictly American art in the country.

With particular strengths in colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and the Ash Can School, not to mention the important mural series The Arts of Life in America by Thomas Hart Benton, the museum relies heavily on its permanent collection for exhibitions and programming, yet also displays a significant number of borrowed shows and work by emerging artists.

The singular focus on American art and its panoramic view of American artistic achievement make the New Britain Museum of American Art a significant teaching resource available to the local, regional, and national public. Learn more at NBMAA.org

happy birthday to mrs. whitney, my other mother. the whitneys lived across the street from us in new britain. i babysat for the kids from when they were born. this is sam…10 years younger than i am. i babysat her the week she came home from the hospital. yikes, i was 10. it didn’t matter…i adored her and her siblings tobin, sarah, and palmer. i got 50 cents an hour, but i would have done it for free. mrs. whitney—betty anne—influenced me so much. different from my mom who encouraged writing, reading dickens while not neglecting chaucer, and going to art museums every saturday— New Britain Museum of American Art during the school year, Florence Griswold Museum through the summer. my mom was literary and artistic. she painted en plein air and had a play produced in boston while she was in college. mrs. whitney was fun & demanded adventure. she taught me to do back walkovers, ski black diamond trails at Mad River Glen, mix martinis, raid the attic and wear vintage chanel, not be afraid to talk to boys (took me a long time to get there. through high school). she went to school in the south, was a debutante and a sorority girl, became a teacher in the foreign service so she could live all over the world. she told me about teaching in panama and giving her students long assignments to focus on so she could go up on the roof to sunbathe. she loved a good tan. she used bain de soleil and one of those silver reflectors you see in photos with the ski set in the alps during the 60s. as a matter of fact, mrs. whitney did her share of skiing and sunning at courchevel & cortina d’ampezzo. she took me with the family to mad river & su***de six in VT. after she moved to st. simon’s island she became a bookseller at G.J. Ford Bookshop. wow, did she kill it! everyone loved her. she had an affinity for thrillers & handsome writers and waxed poetic about the time stuart woods visited the store. harlan coben was her favorite. she & wonderful store owner mary jane reed hosted me for a great event. i loved seeing her in her bookseller role. she adored lee child and i would walk across 23rd st to lee’s and he would sign each new book to her. she loved that. happy birthday, betty anne. how i miss you❤️📚🙏⛷🍸
