Join us for the New Britain Museum of American Art's annual Museum After Dark Halloween Party on Saturday, October 24, 8-11 p.m.

There will be three bar stations selling drinks, food trucks outside, dancing, candy, Giggly's Photo Booth, and "The Haunting of Grymm Manor," an immersive installation by Grymm Studios!

Maurice Prendergast was born in 1858.

Maurice Brazil Prendergast spent part of each summer along the New England coast, filling sketchbook after sketchbook with drawings in pencil and watercolor. He then reworked these subjects into oil paintings in his studio. He painted "Salem" around the time of the 1913 Armory Show. The Massachusetts city attracted many visitors, not only because of its associations with witchcraft and the novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), but also because of the genial, seaside park, called "The Willows." Rejecting a traditional representation of space, Prendergast covered the canvas with an allover pattern of wide, horizontal strokes in vivid hues. While some passages are easily read as figures or landscape elements, others seem independent of any recognizable object.

"Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina" is on view now at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

Bringing together nearly eighty artworks across sculpture, painting, collage, textile, fashion, jewelry, and design, "Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina" places pioneering artists Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) and Esphyr Slobodkina (1908–2002) in dialogue for the first time.

This exhibition is organized by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (). The exhibition is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Alan DuBois Fund for Contemporary Craft, and Ellsworth Kelly Foundation. In New Britain, this exhibition is supported by the Chase Family Fund for Curatorial Excellence and National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support provided by Susan and John Alston; the Wolf Kahn Foundation; Jay Bombara and Allison Reilly-Bombara; and David and Sharon Jepson. Today, we welcomed home our beloved Church to the galleries. Stop by and say hello!

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), West Rock, New Haven, 1849, Oil on canvas, John Butler Talcott Fund

Contemporary reviews of West Rock, New Haven praise it for infusing a modern landscape with both historical significance and deeper symbolic meaning. The tranquil, pastoral scene dramatically announced Church’s independence from the more dramatic pictures painted by his teacher, Thomas Cole (1801-1848).

The church steeple was a trademark of the artist’s work, and he often signed his paintings with a small drawing of a church in the corner. As preliminary sketches for West Rock, New Haven do not include a field, Church may have added it in the final work as a pun for his friend Cyrus W. Field (1819-1892), who commissioned the work.

Faith Ringgold was born in 1930.

Throughout her prolific career, Faith Ringgold (1930–2024) created art as a vehicle for storytelling, protest, and empowerment. Growing up in the wake of the Harlem Renaissance and coming of age during the Civil Rights Movement, she forged a singular practice that bridged painting, quilting, performance, and printmaking, and that challenged narratives of race, gender, and national identity in American art.
