USS Lionfish SS298 began her new life as a museum and memorial to all who served in submarines on this date at Battleship Cove.

We are proud that JOEY P 850 is one of the best museum ships representing the 1960s and 1970s era (Cuban Crisis, NASA capsule recovery, Vietnam era, Cold War) in the World.

The attention to detail and use of only vintage equipment in her restoration is wonderfully undertaken by her volunteer crew.

Women Protecting US
28 August 1942

On July 30, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Navy Women's Reserve Act into law, creating what was commonly known as the WAVES -- Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.

Th first 120 women to enter the program and be commissioned as ensigns or lieutenant junior grades arrived at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts on 28 August 1942. The Navy chose Smith College at Northampton, Massachusetts as the training site for WAVE officers.

The facility offered much of what the Navy needed, and a college setting provided an appropriate training environment. Smith was nicknamed USS Northampton, although the official name of the training station was the United States Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School.

Protecting Allied Prisoners of War-- with USS Massachusetts BB-59

Even with all offensive action in WW2 ending on 15 August, the Allied forces were still concerned about deceptive attacks by the Japanese and continued punishment of Allied POWs. The US Third Fleet with BIG MAMIE escorting did its part.

From BIG MAMIE's deck log of 24 August 1945:

"Operating in area east of Tokyo. Carriers launched largescale reconnaissance missions during the day for the purpose of locating Prisoner-Of-War Camps in the area to the north of Tokyo and of dropping supplies to these camps whenever possible. A number of such camps were located. Pilots reported the internees appeared to be greatly excited when our planes flew over. "

The fleet dropped more food and supplies to these camps on the 25th. The United States had not forgotten their comrades.

These ships and aircraft are a legacy of generations of Americans, and we welcome all to volunteer in their preservation.

Programs exist on all our National Historic Landmarks and our Vietnam Combat Helicopters. From welding to docents, there are volunteer opportunities for everyone.
