A Quad .50 cal M-45 Maxon mounted on the bow of an unidentified 80' Elco. Part of an MTB Squadron 8 binder. The forward right crewman looks like one of the crew of PT-195 (MTB Squadron 12), so this might be another view of PT-195's forward M-45. PT Boat Museum's collection.

Several snapshots from New Guinea of the last built 77' Elco, PT-68 from MTB Squadron 8. Fourth photo shows a crew member cleaning a .50 cal. Transferred from MTB Squadron 4 to Squadron 8 in late '42, she was destroyed in the early morning of October 1, 1943 to prevent capture. She had run hard aground 40 yards from the beach at Vincke Point during anti-barge operations. After half an hour of unsuccessful attempts by PT-191 to pull her free, the CO ordered the crew to abandon ship. During a final attempt by PT-191 to pull her free, she was taken under fire from the shore by 37mm and a light machinegun at which point she was burned by PT-191 to prevent capture. Several views of MTB Squadron 43's PT-631, showing the heavily armored cockpit area of the Higgins PT-625 class (date 1 March 1945). This would have been the original cockpit setup for our own PT-796 if she had been completed in her intended PT Boat configuration. PT Boat Museum's collection.

From April 20 to April 28, 1945, the MTB Squadron 26 Division 1, made up of PT-255, PT-256, PT-259, and PT-260, callsign "Trolley Car", made a staged transit from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor. During the transit, USMC SB2C Helldiver aircraft and USN PV-1 Ventura aircraft provided "air spotter" coverage (callsign "Dumbo") for the division, helping them to avoid uncharted shoals and providing radio coverage during their 20-25 knot transit. First photo shows the steel structure custom made for the boats to hold the total of forty two 55 gallon drums of 100 octane fuel. The torpedoes were removed (racks retained), along with the depth charges and Mk 6 smoke generator. Fuel transfer pumps were added. Second photo taken in Midway shows the installed drums in two sets of 21 taking advantage of the Huckins large deck area. The third photo shows the boats at French Frigate Shoals (FFS), where they spent four days. During the transit out of FFS, PT-256 sustained damage to her charthouse, which is visible in the next photo taken upon their arrival at Kauai (second boat outboard). The last photo was taken upon their arrival at Pearl Harbor. PT Boat Museum's collection.

Morris Rosenfeld photo 101818F taken 23 July 1941, the day before the 190nm "Plywood Derby" competition, the final of four of the Comparative Services Test. Visible to the left is the Higgins MRB-8 that had just arrived that morning with the Higgins "PTQ" (PT-70) who's mast is just visible to the far right behind the truck. Both had travels 3000nm from New Orleans and both had received contaminated fuel in Charleston, SC (water). Neither would receive any engine overhaul, actual Navy ordnance (as promised by the Navy) and only the "PTQ" would be pulled out of the water (late on the 23rd) to repair a damaged strut, but only to have the propeller lock washers and jam nuts improperly installed. MRB-8 was not repaired and her water damaged Hall-Scott engines (they pulled out 10 gallons of water from the carburetor bowls) prevented her from completing the race. "PTQ" would be severely damaged by the loose pig iron placed on the deck to simulate a weapons load. PT Boat Museum's collection.

A 75mm gun mount photo from the PT Boat Museum's collection just attributed, with the assistance of fellow PT Boat Researchers, to MTB Squadron 24's PT-334. Photo was donated by S.J. Schureman, Ron 33 PT-490, and had been filed under PT-490. The foot locker just aft of the 75mm mount belongs to John T. Wagaman, SC3c, a Ron 24 member (have yet to confirm a member of PT-334 crew). The gun looks to be an Army M5 3". Also included is a 22/23 August 1944 Anti-Barge Action Report where PT-334 fired 34 rounds of 75mm ammunition. A very cool piece of PT Boat History.

A photo taken from the bridge of the Huckins built PT-102 during the opening squadron maneuver scene in the movie "They Were Expendable". Photo was donated by Eli Sargis TM2c and is labeled as "They Were Expendable, Miami, P.T. Maneuvers for Movie, 2-45". The boats were from MTB Squadron 4 and included the Elco boats PT-139 and PT-141, and the Huckins boats PT-98, PT-100, PT-101 (JFK's first command Dec '42 thru Feb '43), and PT-102.
